Pauline "Polly" Elliott, 1917-2006

Pauline “Polly” D. Elliott passed away in the early morning of October 29, 2006.

Memorial mass will be held 10:30 AM, Saturday, June 30, 2007 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor, SD with Msgr. Carlton Hermann officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the ZCBJ Cemetery, Tabor, SD. Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Polly was born on November 28, 1917 in Tabor, South Dakota “Home of Czech Days.” A nursing educator for over 40 years, she received her nurse’s training in Rochester, MN at the Mayo Clinic, where she graduated with honors and received an award for the top student in surgery. Polly helped shape many nurses in her career working as a nursing educator all around the nation, including work at John Hopkins University Hospital, several local hospitals and Avila University. In the last few years of her career, she moved from the educational field to become a psychiatric nurse at Western Missouri Mental Health until she retired in 1986. Upon retiring, she became an avid traveler, visiting over 20 countries.

She leaves behind two daughters, Karen “KJ” Heim of Olathe, KS, Patricia Elliott of Phoenix, AZ and her older sister, Albina Zdenek. Polly also had four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, infant daughter and son, Russell Elliott.

We love you Grammy Polly. You were a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, educator and friend. We will miss you, and we know that you will continue to guide and protect us for the rest of our lives.

Elmer Einrem, 1929-2011

Elmer D. Einrem, 82, Rapid City, passed away Thursday, September 15, 2011 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital Hospice of the Hills.

Elmer was born February 18, 1929 in Springfield, SD to Joseph and Martha (Dykstra) Einrem.

He served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1951. Elmer married Etha Reisner on August 16, 1961 in Yankton, SD. They moved to Rapid City in 1966 where Elmer went to work for himself as a contract painter.

He didn't need many things to make him happy. His family, friends, fishing and puppy's (his girls) were enough for him. He always had a joke or story to tell you. Everyone enjoyed his company and his smile.

He is with his wife again. Oh, how he missed her this last year. Almost every conversation involved Etha. He was at peace with his illness and was ready to "Go Home" as he would say. We all knew what he meant. We will love and miss you always. "I'm going fishing….. Catch ya later….."

Elmer enjoyed his work on the farm before becoming a painter and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his daughters, Darla (Cecil) Hancher and Marlene Einrem both of Rapid City; brother, Walt Einrem, Springfield, SD; four grandchildren, Amber (Todd) Torres, Rapid City, Lisa (Chad) Kesterson, Clovis, NM, Tiffany (Joshua) Judge, Rapid City, Cassie Hancher, Denver, CO; and five great-grandchildren, Trenton Torress, Rapid City, Brittany Kesterson, Hayley Kesterson, Jonathan Kesterson all of Clovis, NM, and Kylie Pursley, Denver, CO.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Etha; one brother; and one infant son.

Memorial services will be Monday, September 19, 2011 at 11:00am at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City with Pastor Jack Jewett officiating. Inurnment will follow on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 11:00am CDT at the Norwegian Cemetery south of Avon, SD with the South Dakota National Guard providing military honors.


Etha Einrem, 1931-2010

Etha Marlene Einrem, 78, Rapid City, SD passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Etha was born November 25, 1931 in Yankton, SD. She graduated from high school and attended one year of business school. She married Elmer Einrem on August 16, 1961 in Yankton, SD. They moved to Rapid City in 1966 and have lived here since.

Family was most important to Etha and caring for them was her passion. She loved traveling and it didnt matter where she was going as long as her family was there with her. Etha also had a passion for cats. They were always right beside her for companionship. Although she wasnt much of a talker, she always took time to tell a story or her thoughts on something. Etha never forgot the details. She put up a brave face towards the end and even would smile to ease your troubles. Etha will be missed for a long time by many people. We will miss you dearly.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer Einrem, Rapid City; daughters, Marlene Einrem and Darla (Cecil) Hancher, both of Rapid City; four grandchildren, Amber (Todd) Torres, Rapid City, Lisa (Chad) Kesterson, Clovis, NM, Tiffany (Joshua) Judge, Rapid City, Cassie Hancher, Rapid City; and four great-grandchildren, Trenton Torres, Rapid City, Brittany Kesterson, Hayley Kesterson, Jonathan Kesterson all of Clovis, NM.

She is preceded in death by her parents and one infant son.

Visitation will be Monday, September 20, 2010 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City. Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Pastor Jack Jewett officiating. Burial will take place on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 1:30 pm CDT at the Norwegian Cemetery south of Avon, SD.


Evelyn English, 1931-2014

Evelyn Marie English, age 69, passed away on January 22, 2014 at her residence. Memorial services will be at 3:00 PM on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at the Sioux Falls 7th Day Adventist Church in Sioux Falls, SD with Pastor George Shaver and Pastor Nicholas Osborn officiating. Burial of her cremated remains will be in Colton, SD. The Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Tyndall, SD is assisting with service details.

Evelyn Marie Koopman was born August 25, 1944 to Gerrit and Helen (Pershing) Koopman in Chester, SD. She married Rich English on October 21, 1976 at Colton, SD.

Evelyn went to Presentation College in Aberdeen, SD and received her BSN in Nursing and served her God at the hospital bedside for 47 years. She worked in numerous communities throughout the United States. Her last years were spent serving veterans in the VA Hospital System and as an instructor for the VA Nurse Travel Corp. After a 2 year battle with cancer, she passed away in her home with her family by her side.

She is survived by her husband, Rich English of Tyndall, SD; son, Matthew (Karen) English of Helena, MT; daughter, Rebecca Canright of Helena, MT; brothers, Jim Koopman of Colton, SD, Bill Koopman of Coppell, TX, Lloyd (Carolyn) Koopman of Smithville, TX, Leroy (Marie) Koopman of Colton, SD; sister, Doris Schildhauer of Colton, SD; 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, and brother; John Koopman.

Violet Eichner, 1917-1961

Violet Ann Novak Eichner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Novak, was born on a farm near Scotland, SD on June 12, 1917. She received her education there in a country school near her home. She remained in and around Scotland until 1947 when she came to Windom where she was employed as a store clerk. While in Windom she made her home with her brother, Harry.

Violet was baptized by Rev. John Zamanek of the First Methodist church of Scotland on June 29, 1951. On July 15, 1951 she was united in marriage to Albert Eichner in the First Methodist Church, Scotland by Rev. Zamanek after which they made their home on a farm in Rosehill Township. In 1960 they moved to the farm they had purchased south of Westbrook.

Violet was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev. A. J. Eisner and became a member of First Trinity Lutheran now Faith Lutheran, where she was a member until the time of hear death.

Becoming ill in the latter part of May, she was admitted in Schmitt Memorial hospital in Westbrook June 1st and was transferred to McKennon hospital in Sioux Falls the following day where her strength continued to fail. On June 13th, while undergoing tests in preparation for surgery, she lapsed into a coma. Everything that loving hands could do was done but on June 20, 1961 without regaining consciousness, she passed peacefully to her rest at the age of 44 years and 8 days.

She is survived by her husband, Albert; one son, Allen, her mother Mary Novak of Scotland, SD, five brothers, Louis, Milo, George, and Edward of Scotland, SD and Harry of Windom and a host of relatives and friends in South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her father and an infant sister.


JoAnn Efta, 1934-2005

Funeral Mass for JoAnn Efta, 70, of Scotland will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 26, 2005, at St. George Catholic Church, Scotland, South Dakota. Celebrant will be Rev. Fr. Matthew Vazhappily. Honorary Casketbearers are JoAnn's five brothers. Casketbearers will be Joe Bertrand, Jim Cisar, Jim Foley, Steve Flett, Greg Gemar and Tom Schlimgen. Interment will be in St. George Catholic Cemetery, Scotland, South Dakota.

JoAnn Efta was born on May 26, 1934 in Wagner, South Dakota to Ernest and Bessie (Benda) Nedved. She was married to Joseph Efta on February 15, 1958, at Wagner. JoAnn worked at the Scotland Good Samaritan Center for over 30 years. She died on Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at the Scotland Good Samaritan Center at the age of 70 years.

Grateful for sharing JoAnn's life are her three children: Vince (Marsha) Efta and granddaughters Mallory and Jamie Efta of Tyndall; Kim (Steve) Hofer and grandchildren Justin and Jessica Hofer of Alexandria, South Dakota; and Don Efta of Aurora, Colorado; five brothers: Ernest Nedved of Yankton; Norman (Agnes) Nedved, Walt (Janis) Nedved, Joe (Judy) Nedved, all of Wagner; and Leland Nedved of Winner; and sister-in-law, Margo Nedved of Sioux Falls. She leaves many loving and caring family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a grandson.


Maaike Eringa, 1872-1941

Mrs. U. Eringa passed away Saturday morning, May 31 (1941) at 11 o'clock in an Orange City Hospital at the age of 68 years, 5 months and 6 days. Her death was caused by cancer of the stomach. She was ill for about a half year and had been in the hospital for 3 weeks.

Mrs. Eringa was the former Maaike Rypstra and was born December 25, 1872 in Engelum, Friesland, the Netherlands. On May 20, 1893 she was united in marriage to U. Eringa at Orange City. After living 1 year at Hull, they moved to Orange City. One daughter, Dora, missionary to Japan, preceded her in death in February, 1936 at the age of 39.

Mrs. Eringa was a member of the First Reformed Church of Orange City and of the Senior Ladies Mission Society of that church.

Survivors include her husband and 5 children: Grace, Mrs. John Vander Wey of Crookston, Neb., Jessie, Mrs. Edwin Isaak of Hillsview, S. D., Pierre of Springfield, S. D.; Thyrza, Mrs. Herman Harmelink of Hollandale, Minn, and Alys, Mrs. Wm. Beltman of Orange City; 1 brother, Hedger Rypstra of Dak Harbor, Wash.; 2 sisters, Mrs. T. De Roos and Mrs. Thys Bakker both of Springfield, S. D. and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home and at 1:30 in the First Reformed church with Rev. Mr. H. Colenbrander in charge. Rev. Mr. B. D. Dykstra assisted. Burial was made in the Orange City cemetery.


Bertha Eisenbraun, 1913-2010

Funeral services for Bertha Eisenbraun, 97, of Yankton and formerly of Scotland will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 25 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Scotland with Rev. David W. Ellis officiating. Organist will be Harriet Schaeffer. Interment will follow in Rosehill Cemetery. Pallbearers for her funeral are Mike Eisenbraun, Kim Neidecker, Chris Gross, Ryan Raabe, Kristin Hausmann, and Danielle Raabe. Honorary pallbearers are Pam Eisenbraun, Jon Eisenbraun, Deb Glass, Erica Bobby, Jeff Eisenbraun and Brandon Eisenbraun. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be directed to the Avera Sacred Heart Foundation in Yankton, South Dakota.

Bertha Pauline Eisenbraun was born to August and Susanna (Going) Goldhammer on August 27th, 1913 in Delmont, South Dakota. She attended rural public school south of Delmont through the 8th grade. In her teens she attended parochial school. Bertha was married to Alvin Eisenbraun on September 3, 1933. To this union was born six children. Bertha showed great strength of character raising her young family during some difficult years in the depression of the 1930s and when her husband was away in the Navy during World War II. In addition to being a homemaker, she provided child care and housekeeping services to others for a number of years. From 1971 to 1982, she was employed as a cook at the Good Samaritan Center in Scotland, a position she enjoyed a great deal. She was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Scotland where she taught Sunday school, attended Bible classes, and was very active in the choir. She was a long-time President of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.

Bertha’s favorite pastimes were singing, baking, cooking, and crossword puzzles and Scrabble. She baked pies and kuchen in large quantities for her family, neighbors and friends. In her retirement years, Bertha and Alvin volunteered in a variety of ways throughout the Scotland community, including serving Meals on Wheels to others. Bertha and Alvin moved to Majestic Bluffs in Yankton, SD, in December of 2002. Bertha enjoyed making new friends and taking part in all the activities throughout the last eight years at Majestic Bluffs where she was always grateful for the loving care that she received. She said goodbye to her husband of over 70 years in April of 2004. Bertha died peacefully with her family around her on Friday, October 22nd, 2010 at Avera Sister James Care Center at the young age of 97 years. She was still singing her favorite hymns up until the last day of her life on earth and told us that she was looking forward to joining the alto section of the celestial choir of angels.

Grateful to have shared the love that Bertha provided them are her five surviving children: Dal (Carol) Eisenbraun of Tucson, Arizona; Darrell (Doreen) Eisenbraun of Chandler, Arizona; Diane (Allen) Gross of Mayetta, Kansas: Deborah (Jerry) Raabe of Volga, South Dakota; Dan (Patti) Eisenbraun of Yankton; along with 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Bertha was preceded in death by her husband Alvin, her son Donald, and by her two sisters and two brothers.


LaVerne Edwards, 1916-2001

WATERFORD - Mrs. LaVerne M. Edwards, 84, passed away at St. Luke's Medical Center on Monday, March 19, 2001. She was born in Scotland, S.D. on October 9, 1916, to Frank Leslie and Katherine (nee: Welk) Adamson. She spent her early life in South Dakota and Union Grove. Following marriage, she lived in the Town of Dover and had been a Waterford, Wisconsin resident since 1956. On June 7, 1941, in Union Grove, she was united in marriage to Russell Edwards. She attended grade school in South Dakota and graduated from Union Grove High School. LaVerne was a Clerk for the Farmers Home Administration in Waterford for many years. She was a member of Community United Methodist Church, where she was the Organist for many years and also served on numerous church committees. She was a former member of the Union Grove Methodist Church, where she also served as Organist. Surviving are her husband, Russell; two sons, Bruce (Susanne) Edwards of Green Bay and Robert (Linda) Edwards of Janesville; four grandchildren, Jeffrey (Jennifer), Erik, Brandon, and Erin Edwards; and her twin sister, Leinad Motley of Waterford. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Delmar Adamson; and her brother-in-law, Loyd Motley. Funeral services will be held at Community United Methodist Church on Friday, March 23, 2001, at 12 p.m. with Rev. Russell Frees officiating. Burial will be in English Settlement Cemetery. Ethel Eckhoff, 1920-2007

Ethel Eckhoff, 87, died September 11, 2007 at home after a brief illness.

Ethel Elizabeth Eckhoff was born August 21, 1920 at home in Springfield, SD, the only child of Henry and Bertha (Fryda) Zerbe. She graduated from Dolton High School and after attending Southern State Normal School in Springfield, SD, taught rural school in the Bridgewater-Emery area.

On May 26, 1941, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Eckhoff in Crofton, NE. They farmed in Emery and Bridgewater area until 1960. For many years, Ethel was employed as a cook, working at Inhofer´s Bakery, Stanley Corner, Dakota House Truck Stop, Diamond Care Nursing Home and Minervas.

Ethel devoted her retirement years to caring for her mother.

She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bridgewater. She was active in 4-H leadership for 25 years. In addition to her cooking, she enjoyed arts and crafts but her happiest times were moments shared with her grandchildren.

Ethel is survived by her mother, Bertha Kasten; her two daughters, Gay Jean and husband, Marvin Fluth, of Lewistown, MT and Dee Ann and husband, John Alvarez, of Bridgewater, SD; three grandchildren, Kip Fluth, of Las Vegas, NV, Kia Fluth, of Bellevue, WA, and Trevor Alvarez, of Sioux Falls, SD.

Ethel was preceded in death by her husband in January of 1998 and her dad in July of 1952.

Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Bridgewater at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 14. Visitation with the family present will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Walter Funeral Home in Bridgewater.


Marie Echelberger, 1910-2007

Marie Echelberger, age 97, died Thursday, June 26, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center, Tyndall, SD.

Family graveside memorial and burial service of cremated remains will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 12, 2007, at the Pioneer Cemetery, west of Springfield, SD, with the Reverend Linda Schortzmann of the United Church of Christ-Congregational officiating.

Marie was born on May 18, 1910, to Gerrit and Bertha (Talsma) Hornstra on a farm ten miles west of Springfield, SD. She attended Perkins Rural School for eight years, Southern Normal High School for three years and graduated from Tyndall High School in 1928. She entered Southern Normal (Southern State Teachers College) at Springfield and received a South Dakota First Grade Teachers Certificate in 1929. She taught at three rural schools: Dunwoody, Dahlenburg and Sperry in Bon Homme County.

On May 29, 1931, she was united in marriage to Ivan E. Echelberger and lived in Springfield. During World War II, they moved to California where her husband was an electrician for Lockheed Aircraft Company. After the war, they returned to South Dakota where her husband's work with Northwestern Public Service Company took them to many South Dakota communities including Springfield, Avon, Scotland, Freeman and Yankton. In later years, she lived in rural Tabor in her own home near her youngest daughter and son-in-law who became her caregivers.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational in both Springfield and Yankton. Previous groups to which she belonged were the Yankton Senior Citizens Center, Springfield and Yankton, Merry Twirlers of the Yankton Senior Citizens, Good Sam Camping Club and Lewis and Clark Campers.

She will be remembered as a talented musician, playing the piano or organ for organizations of which she was a member, and as a volunteer piano accompanist for public schools and area nursing homes. She was an organist and junior choir director for the Springfield United Church of Christ. She received recognition for her volunteer work.

When her husband was living, they traveled throughout the United States (forty-seven states, plus Mexico and Canada) and spent winters in Texas and Arizona.

Survivors include two daughters: Marilyn (Robert) Wittmeier, Yankton, SD and Candyce Torsney, Tyndall, SD; and one son, Lowell (Iris) Echelberger, Friendsville, MD; eight grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, three sisters, one brother and one son-in-law.

Andrew Eben, 1924-2014

Funeral services for Andrew Eben will be held Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Avon, South Dakota, with burial in the First Baptist Cemetery, rural Avon. Visitation will be Friday, March 14, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the church with the family present. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home of Avon is in charge of the arrangements.

Andrew Henry Eben was born Andreas Hinrich Iben on September 1, 1924, in Greetziel, Ostfriesland, Germany to Andrew J. Eben and Alice (Winter) Eben. The next year they immigrated to the United States to George, Iowa. After working on neighborhood farms several years, his parents started their farming operation in the George-Little Rock area. Andy completed his eight grade elementary education at Little Rock, Iowa. He then worked on his parents’ and neighbors’ farms.

Upon confession of faith in Jesus Christ, he was baptized and joined the First Baptist Church of George, Iowa.

Andy married Irene Voigt on February 15, 1946, in the First Baptist Church in Tyndall, South Dakota. After Andy served in the U. S. Army Air Corp, they farmed for several years in Iowa. In 1950 they moved to a farm near Avon, South Dakota. They transferred their membership to the First Baptist Church of Avon. He served his church faithfully as deacon, Sunday School teacher, youth leader, treasurer, and assistant church chairman.

In 1957 Andy was naturalized and became a U. S. citizen. Andy and Irene joined the Gideons International in 1972 and became members of the Yankton Gideon Camp where they held various camp offices. Andy held several offices in the S. D. State Gideon Cabinet including State President. One of the highlights of his life was distributing Bibles to school children in India.

Andy was a salesman for Pioneer Hi-bred Seed Company for 43 years. He sold John Deere farm equipment for Hento Brothers Implement of Avon. Later he sold for Tri County Tractor Sales of Yankton and then for Baggs and Tamisea, of Yankton. He retired in 1987. He died on March 11, 2014, at St. Micahel’s Hospital in Tyndall.

Andy is survived by his wife Irene, and their eight children: Tony (Kay) of Tyndall; Karen (Charles) Rabe of Plainville, Illinois; Sandra (Gary) DeGroot of Springfield; Ken (Marlis) of Avon; Rosalie (Glenn) Schack of Owatonna, Minnesota; Bob (Shirley) of Rapid City; Jim (Myrna) of Ada, Michigan; and Roxie (Mark) Pier of Crofton, Nebraska. Andy had 31 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Henry, John, and Harold, of George, Iowa; sisters Annie Larson of Mission, Texas, and Mary Burnett of Rapid City.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his son John, brothers Martin and George, and his sister Tillie Webber.

Agnes Eckert, 1918-2013

Agnes Ida (Hubregtse) Eckert, a former resident of West Conshohocken, PA for 42 years, and recently living with her son in Birdsboro, PA., where she died February 4, 2013. She was 94 years old.

She was a homemaker and was an avid outside person, enjoying a garden and tending to her two sons.

Agnes was born and raised on a farm in South Dakota.

She is survived by two sons; Paul Eckert of Clinton, IL., and Mark Eckert of Birdsboro, PA. Also surviving are six grand children Jonathan, Katelyn and Shea; and Suzanne, Ezekiel and James as well as a sister Joyce Hubregtse Bowen of Unadilla, GA., and a brother Duane Hubregtse of Great Falls, MT.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Edward Russell Eckert, and a daughter Ann, who died as an infant.

Friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Saturday, February h, 2013 at 10:00 A.M., at the Moore and Snear Funeral Home, 300 Fayette Street, Conshohocken, PA. There will be a viewing Saturday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazier, PA. Sarah Elliott, 1920-2013

The funeral service for Sarah L. Elliott, 92 of Huron and formerly of Avon will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church in Avon, with burial in the Trinity Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Avon. Visitation will be at the church Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to the time of service. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel of Avon is in charge of the arrangements.

Sarah Louise Elliott, daughter of Francis Marion and Rosa Pauline (Backer) Holland, was born November 14, 1920 at Auxvasse, MO. She died Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at the Sunquest Healthcare Center in Huron. Sarah attained the age of 92 years, 11 months and 16 days.

Sarah attended school in Auxvasse and graduated from high school. She then went on to college for one year.

Sarah married Orval L. Elliott at Ashland, MO on January 12, 1941. Five children were blessed to their union. Sarah met Orval when he was working at a hardware store in Auxvasse. They moved to Ronan, MT and later to Charlo, MT, where Orval operated the telephone company. In 1958, they moved to Avon and they owned the telephone company until 1961, where Sarah worked as a telephone operator until it went to dial tone. At this time they purchased the Marshall Wells Store and turned it into a Coast to Coast Store. Sarah was also a loving homemaker, mother and wife.

Sarah was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women in Avon.

Sarah will be remembered for her enjoyment of writing letters, riding her three wheel bicycle and going to rummage sales.

Due to failing health, Sarah and Orval moved to the Springfield Assisted Living Center in 2005. After Orval’s death on July 12, 2008, Sarah moved to Country View Estates in Huron where she met many new friends and enjoyed her stay. At the end of September, she moved to the Sunquest Healthcare Center in Huron.

Thankful for having shared her life are her children: Mary Louise Jensen and husband Leslie of Alpena; Howard of Avon; Gary and wife Rita of Hannibal, MO; and Ethel Kruger and husband Kenneth of Papillion, NE; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and one on the way; one sister, Mary Frances Doescher of Rapid City, SD; and relatives and friends.

Sarah was preceded in death by her husband; son, Charles Edward, who died in 1951 at the age of 11 months; great granddaughter, Celesta Elliott; parents; and brother, Harry Holland.


Victor Eckert, 1934-2013

Funeral services for Victor Eckert, 79, of Avon, are 2 PM, Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner. Burial is in the Gramkow-Vesper Lutheran Cemetery, rural Avon. Visitation is Friday with the family present from 6 to 7 PM at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner.

Victor Charles Eckert was born March 6, 1934 north of Avon, South Dakota, the son of Clarence and Alvina (Engel) Eckert. He died Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Wagner. Victor attained the age of 79 years, seven months and 13 days.

Victor attended a country school north of Avon. He married Doris Ehresmann at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Tripp on January 1, 1954. Victor worked at the telephone company in Avon. He then worked in construction, building dams in Yankton, Pickstown and Pierre. He continued to build dams in Idaho, Montana and Oregon before moving back to South Dakota in 1968. He then worked for Kolberg Manufacturing in Yankton until he retired in 2001.

Victor will be remembered for his love of fishing with his family, hunting and giving his dog, Chance, rides in the lawn mower trailer.

Thankful for having shared his life are his wife, Doris of Avon; two sons: Mark (Brenda) of Chuckey, TN; and Bruce and friend Leslie of Wimauma, FL; daughter, Cindy (Wes) Sassaman of Avon; eight grandchildren: Chad Anderson of Wagner; Michelle (Jeff) Bathke of Mitchell; Janel Vaughan of Mitchell; Amy (Ryan) Townsend of Madison; Casey Sassaman of Avon; Tyler (Julia) Sassaman of Wagner; Richard (Cynthia) Eckert of Wimauma, FL; and Andrea (Jeffrey) Jackson of Wesley Chapel, FL; 13 great grandchildren; and several cousins.

Victor was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Loretta Houska; three brothers: Rodney, Earnest and Albert, who all died in infancy; father-in-law, Emil Ehresmann; and brother-in-law, Herman Ehresmann.


Sue Erickson, 1933-2013

Memorial services for Sue Erickson, 79 of Springfield will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 30, 2013 at the United Church of Christ in Springfield. Visitation will be at the church Sunday from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home of Springfield is in charge of the arrangements.

Sue Carol Erickson, daughter of Albert and Martha (Magstadt) Williams, was born October 10, 1933 at Running Water, SD. She died Thursday, September 26, 2013 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall. Sue attained the age of 79 years, 11 months and 17 days.

At a young age, Sue moved to Springfield with her parents. She attended school there and graduated from Springfield High School in 1951. Sue attended Southern State Teachers College and received a teaching certificate. She taught one year at Fairview Rural School District.

Sue married Harvey Erickson on June 7, 1952 at the United Church of Christ in Springfield. Five sons were blessed to their union. They lived in Yankton, Onida, Faulkton, Kodoka and Lead. After their retirement, they moved to a rural acreage between Tyndall and Springfield in 1986 and then into Springfield in 2003.

Besides being a wife and mother to five sons, Sue worked outside of the home throughout her life. She worked for JC Penney, SD Cable and as an assistant manager at Katons Korral in Deadwood. After moving to the acreage, she worked for Don the Clothier in Tyndall, JC Penney in Yankton, Northwestern Public Service in Springfield and Coyote Sports in Tabor. Sue retired for a second time and then returned back to work for JC Penney and Coyote Sports. Sue then retired for the third time.

Sue was a member of the Dwight Wood American Legion Auxiliary, the United Church of Christ and the UCC Women’s group, Merry Madams Extension Club and the Springfield Ladies Golfing Association.

Sue loved to golf and play Bridge. She enjoyed dressing up in costumes for Crazy Days, planting flower gardens and most of all, spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids.

Thankful for having shared her life are her husband, Harvey of Springfield; five sons: Jerry and wife Carol of Spearfish, Boyd and wife Susan of Chandler, AZ, Clark of Springfield, Dale and wife Taina of Yukon, OK and Kevin and wife Karla of Sioux Falls, SD; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two brothers: Bob of Polo Verdes, CA and Bill of Hanford, CA; sister-in-law, Lenore Williams of Avon; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Douglas and Jim; and four sisters: Shirley, Viola, Jane and Gladys, who died as an infant.


Alvina Eckert, 1911-2002

Alvina Eckert, 90, of Avon died Thursday (May 16, 2002) at her home.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Monday at the Zion Lutheran Church, Avon. Burial is in the Vesper Cemetery, rural Avon. Visitation will be from noon-7 p.m. Sunday at Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel, Avon.

She was born Aug. 26, 1911, in rural Avon to Henry and Catherina (Giedd) Engel. She attended country school in the Avon area for eight years. She married Clarence Eckert. He died on July 4, 1984.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Avon. She will be remembered for her love of gardening, flowers and cats.

She is survived by her son, Victor (Doris), Avon; daughter, Loretta (Lloyd) Houska, Dante; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Evelyn Bennett, Edgemont.

She is preceded in death by her husband, three sons, three brothers and five sisters.


Delores Earl, 1922-2011

Delores (Dee) Earl died peacefully Monday May 23, 2011 after a lengthy illness. She was born in Scotland, South Dakota on December 1, 1922 to Clifford and Marie Leetch. Dee was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband, Joseph (Joe) Earl. Dee was married to Joe in Plankinton, SD in 1946 and they relocated to Los Alamos in 1953. She was active in Los Alamos life until she moved to Bellevue, WA in 2004.

She is survived by her brother, Donald Leetch (Maxine) of Santee, CA and her children, Mary Jo Palmer of Alta Loma, CA, Laurie Bush of Atlantic Beach, FL, and Shelly Wageman (Steve) of Bellevue, WA. “Granny Dee” will be missed by her grandchildren Jessica Welch, Megan and Brian Bush, and Daniel and Yvonne (Missy) Wageman.

Dee was a top-ranked high school cornet player performing solos for various services and programs. She became an RN and fondly remembered her time nursing with the U.S. Indian Service in Fort Thompson, SD. She also enjoyed her years working in retail customer service at Sears in Los Alamos as well as her time spent at the Senior Center.

Dee was a consummate cook, avid reader, and talented seamstress. She sang alto in the Catholic Church choir for many years. She welcomed the company of young and old alike and was the neighborhood nurse and confidant. Dee was a crossword puzzle aficionado and will be remembered for her quick wit and sharp sense of humor.

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him”. 1 Corinthians 2:9.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in New Mexico and her ashes will be placed in the Santa Fe National Cemetery with her husband Joe.


Dora Eringa, 1896-1936

Miss Dora Eringa was born in Springfield, South Dakota, in 1896 and was 39 years and 9 months of age at the time of her death. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. U. Eringa and the following sisters and brother: Grance, Mrs. John Vander Wey. Purewater, S.D.; Jessie, Mrs. Edwin Isaak, Hillsview, S.D.: Thryza, Mrs. Rev. Herman Harmelink, Hollandale Minn.; Alys, Mrs. Wm. Beltman, Orange City; and Pierre, Springfield, S. D.

Miss Dora Eringa was graduated from the Northwestern Academy in 1917, and from Central College, Pella, in 1921. She took a postgraduate course at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. She taught in the Marcus High School one year. In August, 1922 she went as a missionary to Japan to further the work of the Reformed church. She was there 13 years. During a furlough in 1929 Miss Eringa attended the White Seminary in New York City working for her Master's Degree.

In September, 1935 she suffered a nervous breakdown in Japan. On October 15, she arrived in Seattle and from there went to Iowa City for eight weeks of treatment. Since Dec. 9 it was necessary for her to be in the State Hospital in Cherokee. During the last few weeks her mental condition was greatly improved. Saturday word was received that she was ill with pneumonia which caused her death on Tuesday evening, Feb. 11, 1936 at 7:15 o'clock. She was a consecrated conscientious worker which probably had a great deal to do with her illness. Funeral services will be held in the First Reformed church at an undetermined date with the Rev. Mr. Colenbrander and Rev. Mr. H. Kuyper officiating.


Ulbe Eringa, 1866-1950

Mr. Ulbe Eringa was born on the 21st of April 1866, in Hijdaard, Province of Friesland, the Netherlands. He was youngest of twelve children born to Pierre Eringa and Grietje Noordmans. In 1892 he, as the only member of the family, migrated to this country, settling near Hull, Iowa. On November 22, 1893, he was united in marriage to Marie Riepstra. In 1894 they moved to Springfield, South Dakota where they farmed for 32 years, after which in 1926 they retired to Orange City. In 1942 the deceased took up his residence in the Pioneer Home, where he lived up to the time of his illness and death.

Those who preceded him in death are all his brothers and sisters in the Netherlands; his daughter Dora, who had been a missionary in Japan for 13 years, dying in 1936; and his wife who passed away in 1941.

Surviving are the five children: Grace, Mrs. John Vander Wey of Crookston, Nebr.; Jessie, Mrs. Edwin Isaak of Brush Prairie, Wash.; Pierre of Springfield, South Dakota; Thyrza, Mrs. H.A. Harmelink of Carmel, Iowa; and Alys, Mrs. Wm. Beltman of Orange City; and 17 grandchildren, and further relatives and a host of friends.

The deceased had until recently been in fairly good health until two weeks ago when he was hospitalized for dropsy and hardening of the arteries. He passed away on Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 2, 1950) at 4 o'clock at the age of 83 years and 11 months.

He served faithfully as elder for 27 years in the Reformed Church of Springfield, South Dakota from the time of its infancy until it was grown into a comparatively strong church. Since his residence in Orange City, he was a member of the First Reformed Church.


Charles Einrem, 1936-2012

A memorial visitation for Charles Einrem, 76, of Springfield will be held Monday, November 19th from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield, with the family present. There will be no memorial service. A private family inurnment service will be held Tuesday.

Charles D. Einrem was born in rural Springfield, SD on April 10, 1936, the son of Carl and Grace (Dykstra) Einrem. He died Thursday, November 15, 2012 at the Sister James Nursing Home in Yankton. Charles attained the age of 76 years, 7 months and 5 days.

Charles attended rural school at the Hornstra and Running Water schools.

Charles was united in marriage to Jean Anderson in Tyndall on August 9, 1957. Four kids were born to this union. He later married Linda Wren. He was blessed to have a very special friend, Betty Klatt, for the past 18 years.

Charles farmed near Running Water for a few years. He worked for Bon Homme County from 1967 to 1975. Charles continued to work various construction jobs until he retired.

Charles will be remembered for his enjoyment of fishing, playing cards, bird watching and his love of dogs. He was a storyteller and loved to visit with people.

Thankful for having shared his life are his four children: Mike (Lisa) Einrem of Avon; Tim (Sandy) Einrem of Springfield; Joleen Einrem and Rick Stark of Yankton; and John Einrem of Springfield; five grandchildren: Casey (Jen) Einrem; Maggie Einrem and Corey Aas; Marshall (Meagan) Einrem; Jed Einrem; and Robbi (Taylor) Edwards; four great grandchildren: Gracie, Jasmin, Maddie and Cooper; two sisters: Marcleen Wynia of Springfield; Marylou (Ray) Livingson of Yankton; very special friend, Betty Klatt of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Wayne Krisl; and brother-in-law, Gerben Wynia.


Jerry Einrem, 1950-2002

Jerry Lee Einrem, age 52, of Springfield, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 10, 2002, at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Springfield, S.D. Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, is in charge of arrangements.

Jerry Lee Einrem was born on Sept. 17, 1950, to Walter and Lillian (Wynia) Einrem at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D. He married Debbie Dvoracek on Dec. 2, 1978, at the Tyndall Presbyterian Church in Tyndall. For the last 19 years, he was employed at CR Industries in Springfield. He was proud of the accomplishments of his children with his daughter Jessica, graduating from SDSU this spring and with Nicholas graduating from Avon High School in May.

He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt, fish and camp out with his family. His guitar playing by the campfire will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews.

His memory will be cherished by his wife Debbie of Springfield, S.D.; one daughter, Jessica of Brookings, S.D.; one son, Nicholas at home in Springfield, S.D.; his parents, Walter and Lillian of Springfield, S.D.; three brothers: Jim (Pauline) of Verdigre, Neb.; Jeff (Nicole) of Tabor, S.D.; and Jack (Susan) of Chappell, Neb.; one sister, Jan Hammond of Scotland, S.D.; his father-in-law, Leonard Dvoracek of Tyndall, S.D.; a brother-in-law Gary (Michelle) of Springfield, S.D.; a sister-in-law Sheryl (Rick) Van Winkle, Tyndall, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Joe and Martha Einrem; maternal grandparents, Nick and Clara Wynia; and his mother-in-law, Belle Dvoracek; and nephew, Scott Van Winkle.


August Erps, 1874-1948

MANNING, IOWA - Services were held Wednesday evening at the Ohde funeral home for August Erps, 74, who died earlier the same day (Aug. 4, 1948) at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Lerssen, of Manning. Burial will be Friday at Scotland, S. D.

Surviving are: four sons, William of Sioux Falls, S. D., Emil and Ben of Scotland, S. D., and Ed Erps of Manning; two daughters, Mrs. Malinda Lerssen of Manning and Mrs. Albert Wold of Scotland, S. D.: 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and a brother, Alfred Erps of Pekin, Ill.


Frank Eisenmann, 1841-1893

Mr. Frank J. Eisenmann, a brother of Michael Eisenmann, of Barton, died at his home in Scotland, SD, January 29, 1893. Deceased was born in Bavaria, Germany in the year 1841; came to America with his parents in 1853, settling in Milwaukee where they resided 2 years and then moved to Barton. Here Mr. Eisenmann conducted a hardware store and tin shop for many years, after which he was proprietor of the saloon now run by Mr. Adam Boden. In the year 1876 he moved to South Dakota where he resided ever since. He leaves a wife and 10 children - 5 sons and 5 daughters - to mourn for him. The funeral took place a week ago yesterday. Peace to his ashes.


Donald Eisenbraun, 1956-2007

Funeral Service for Donald J. Eisenbraun is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 30, 2007, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Scotland, South Dakota, with Rev. David Ellis officiating. Music will be provided by organist Harriet Schaeffer. Honorary Casketbearers will be all of Don's friends from the Ability Building Services Center. Casketbearers will be Allen Gross, Jerry Raabe, Danielle Raabe, Jeff Eisenbraun, Brandon Eisenbraun and Kristin Hausmann. Interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, South Dakota. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church.

Donald Joel Eisenbraun was born on June 29, 1956, in Scotland, South Dakota to Alvin and Bertha (Goldhammer) Eisenbraun. He was baptized (July 15, 1956) and confirmed (July, 1977) at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Don attended Special Education classes in Scotland, and later attended Sioux Vocational School in Sioux Falls. He was a resident of the Yankton Area Adjustment Training Center, which later became the Abilities Building Services Center.

Don enjoyed sports in all forms and was an active participant in Special Olympics. He was very proud of the trophies and medals that he was awarded in basketball, softball, track and field and bowling. In 1990, he competed in the International Special Olympics in Minneapolis, Minnesota as one of the South Dakota delegates. He liked to watch football, especially the Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed riding his 3-wheeled bicycle whenever he was home in Scotland visiting his parents.

Don loved animals, especially Babe, his German Shepherd. He enjoyed dancing, and attended many of the dances held at the Abilities Building Services Center.

Don was devoted to his faith and always lived within sight of the cross. Don touched so many people's lives and made friends everywhere he went. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Due to his health, Donald entered the Avera Sister James Care Center in 2005. It was there that he died on Saturday, October 27, 2007, at the age of 51 years.

Donald is survived by his mother, Bertha, of Yankton; five brothers and sisters: Dal (Carol) Eisenbraun of Tucson, Arizona; Darrell (Doreen) Eisenbraun of Chandler, Arizona; Diane (Allen) Gross of Mayetta, Kansas; Deborah (Jerry) Raabe of Volga, South Dakota; and Dan (Patti) Eisenbraun of Yankton; and 14 nieces and nephews and their families.

Donald was preceded in death by his father, Alvin, in 2004.

The family will direct any memorials given in Don's memory to the Ability Building Services Center in Yankton.


Alvin Eisenbraun, 1910-2004

Alvin H. Eisenbraun Alvin died on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Avera Sister James Care Center at the age of 94 years.

Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Scotland, South Dakota. Clergy is Rev. David Ellis. Organist is Harriet Ebaugh. Interment is in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, South Dakota, with military rites by American Legion Post #155 and V.F.W. Post #2966. Casketbearers are Michael Eisenbraun, Jon Eisenbraun, Chris Gross, Ryan Raabe, Jeffrey Eisenbraun, Brandon Eisenbraun and Samuel Bobby. Honorary Casketbearers are Richard Isaacs, Elmer Magstadt, Jim Sedlacek, Walter Spomer, Hugh Stevenson and Marvin Thum. Visitation is 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., at Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel, Scotland, South Dakota.

Alvin Herman Eisenbraun was born to Emmanuel and Magdalena (Herman) Eisenbraun on February 21, 1910 in Tripp, South Dakota. He attended rural country school through the 8th grade. He worked in a coal mine in Beulah, North Dakota, prior to returning to farm at the family homestead south of Tripp. After leaving the farming operation in 1934, Alvin managed the Gambles Store in Tripp. He attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Illinois, in the late 1930s. Alvin was united in marriage to Bertha Goldhammer on September 3, 1933. He served in the US Navy on the USS Argonne during WWII in the Pacific Theater. Upon returning home, he worked in the Gamble Stores in Parkston and Scotland. Alvin later worked in construction at the Fort Randall Dam in Pickstown, South Dakota and sold Watkins Products for several years. In 1960, he became a Scotland police officer and drove school bus for the Scotland Schools for 17 years. After Alvin retired, he continued to paint houses and do carpentry work in the Scotland area. He enjoyed woodworking, winemaking and gardening. He was a long-time member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he was a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir and was Treasurer for many years. Alvin was a member of the Scotland American Legion and Scotland V.F.W. Alvin and Bertha moved to Majestic Bluffs in Yankton, South Dakota, in December of 2002. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on September 3, 2003.

Grateful to have shared Alvin's life are his wife Bertha of Yankton; six children: Dal (Carol) Eisenbraun of Tucson, Arizona; Darrell (Doreen) Eisenbraun of Chandler, Arizona; Diane (Allen) Gross of Mayetta, Kansas; Deborah (Jerry) Raabe of Volga, South Dakota; Dan (Patti) Eisenbraun of Yankton; and Don Eisenbraun of Yankton; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Gladys Eberhardt, 1916-2011

Funeral services for Gladys T. Eberhardt of Morgan, MN and formerly of Scotland, SD will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 23, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Scotland with Rev. Tom Petersen officiating. Glee Deutscher will be organist. Interment will follow in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Gladys Theodora Eberhardt was born Friday, October 6, 1916 at Molan, South Dakota to John Odin and Anna (Hanson) Johnson. The family moved to Olivet, South Dakota in 1918. Gladys attended Olivet Elementary School and graduated from Olivet High School in 1935. Gladys was united in marriage to Lloyd Smith on July 8, 1938 at Marion, South Dakota. After Lloyd died in June of 1962, Gladys began working at the Farmer’s & Merchant’s State Bank in Scotland. She married Walter Eberhardt in September of 1969 at the United Methodist Church in Scotland. She worked at the bank for 171/2 years, retiring on January 1, 1980. Gladys will be remembered for her wonderful cooking and baking, and her specialty was Danish coffee cake and all kinds of pies. She enjoyed entertaining her grandchildren very much. Walter died in June of 2000, and Gladys moved to Minnesota in August of 2004 to be near family. Soon after, she became a resident of Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan and it is there that she passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2011, having attained the age of 94 years, 7 months, and 13 days.

Gladys is survived by two sons: Gene (Kathy) Smith of Lester Prairie, Minnesota and Bob (Marty) Ritter of Brookings, South Dakota; six grandchildren: Brian Smith of Loretto, Minnesota, Joelle Jung of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Keven Smith of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Shannon Walker of Phoenix, Arizona, Todd Ritter of St. Cloud, Minnesota, and Kristen Beenan of Shakopee, Minnesota; and 15 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, John and Anna Johnson, Gladys was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Lloyd Smith and Walter Eberhardt, a stillborn daughter, Wava Ruth Smith in 1940, a son, Gary Smith in December of 1965, and three brothers, Ed Johnson, Elmer Johnson and Kermit Johnson.


Orval Elliott, 1918-2008

Funeral services for Orval Elliot will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (July 16, 2008) at the First Presbyterian Church in Avon, with burial in the Trinity Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Avon, with military honors. Visitation will be at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Avon Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Orval Lee Elliott, son of Reeves Richard and Ora Ethel (Wagers) Elliott, was born February 1, 1918, in New Bloomfield, MO. He died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at Avera St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall, SD. Orval attained the age of 90 years, five months and 12 days.

Orval attended grade school in Bloomfield, MO and then graduated from New Bloomfield High School in 1937.

Orval served in the U.S. Army from February 3, 1943, to January 15, 1946. He was stationed overseas for 19 months.

Orval married Sarah Louise Holland at Ashland, MO, on January 12,1941. Five children were born to their union.

Orval worked at a hardware store in Auxvase, MO, and it was there he met Sarah. In 1945, they moved to Ronan, MT and helped his brother-in-law with the telephone company. Later they moved to Charlo, MT, and operated the telephone company there. In 1958, they moved to Avon, SD, and owned the telephone company until 1961, when it went to dial tone. Orval bought the Marshall Wells Store and turned it into a Coast to Coast Store. He owned and operated this store for many years, along with a plumbing and heating business. Orval and Sarah moved to the Springfield Assisted Living Center in 2005.

Orval was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Arthur Wissman American Legion Post in Avon. He also was a member of the Dwight Wood American Legion Post #132 in Springfield. Orval was a former member of the Avon Firemen, Avon Lion’s Club and the IOOF.

Orval was an avid Avon Pirate fan and was given the “Outstanding Avon Pirate Fan” award several times.

He will be remembered for his enjoyment of playing horse shoes, fishing, bowling, hunting, playing Bingo, doing puzzles, quilting and doing chicken-scratch embroidery.

Thankful for having shared his life are his wife, Sarah of Springfield; his children: Mary Louise Jensen and husband, Leslie of Alpena, Howard of Avon, Gary and wife, Rita of Jefferson City, MO, and Ethel Kruger and husband, Kenneth of Papillion, NE; 11 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.

Orval was preceded in death by his son, Charles Edward in 1951; parents; a great granddaughter, Celesta Elliott; five brothers; and one sister.

Fred Engel, 1928-2001

Fred Earl Engel, 72, Tyndall, died Saturday (March 10, 2001) at St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall.

There will be no funeral services.

He was born Dec. 15, 1928, at Springfield, to Fred and Gladys (Van Hitsma) Engel. He graduated from South Dakota State University with an engineering degree. He serviced in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1949. He was a facilities engineer at McDonald Douglas Aircraft Company in St. Louis, Mo. He married Pegg Linden Oct. 1, 1949, at North Carolina.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy, Tyndall; two sisters, Pat Bjorum, Scotland; and Darlene Slowey, Knop Noster, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.


Clark Engel, 1916-2005

Funeral services for Clark D. Engel, 89 of Avon will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at the First Baptist Church in Avon, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel in Avon from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

Clark Dale Engel, son of Fred J. and Minnie (Schmidt) Engel, was born February 8, 1916 at Avon, SD. He died Friday, November 4, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Center in Tripp, SD. Clark attained the age of 89 years, eight months and 27 days.

Clark attended school through the eighth grade at James Country School, northeast of Avon. He drove the bulk fuel truck for Jake Kurtz for a few years and then began farming northeast of Avon.

Clark married Rosalind Berndt on June 4, 1939 at Tyndall. One son was born to their union. Rosalind died June 15, 1995. Clark moved to Prairie Crossings in Mitchell in April of 2000. He became a resident of the Tripp Good Samaritan Center on September 8, 2004.

Clark was a member of the First Baptist Church in Avon. He will be remembered for his love of farming.

Thankful for having shared his life are his son, Gary and wife, Marge of Mitchell, two grandchildren: Scott and wife, Colleen of Italy and Angie Putnam and husband, Nathan of Mitchell; two great-grandchildren, Mathew and Kaitlyn Putnam; one brother, Willis and wife, Vilas of Hemet, CA; two sisters, Vella Cable of Rapid City and Fern Bellamy of Bellflower, CA; and many other relatives.

Clark was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brother, James.


Marjorie Estabrook, 1936-2005

Marjorie Ann Berndt Estabrook, 69, of Mitchell and formerly of Tyndall died Tuesday (Dec. 27, 2005) at Avera Brady Nursing Home, Mitchell.

Visitation is from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Thursday, December 29, 2005, at Goglin-Kelley Funeral Chapel, Tyndall, South Dakota. Wake service is 7:30 p.m. Thursday, December 29, 2005, at St. Leo Catholic Church, Tyndall, South Dakota. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 30, 2005, at St. Leo Catholic Church, Tyndall, South Dakota, with the Rev. Fr. Gerald Thury officiating. Honorary casketbearers are members of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Casketbearers are Douglas Janssen, Keith Janssen, Brian Janssen, Len Stulc, Scott Hento and Vincent Coyle. Interment is in St. Leo Catholic Cemetery, Tyndall, South Dakota.

Marjorie was born July 10, 1936, in rural Bon Homme County, South Dakota to parents Clarence and Rose (Kocourek) Stulc. Marjorie received her education from the Dewald Rural School, Tyndall High School, Northern State Teacher's College, Southern State Teacher's College and she completed her Master's Degree in Elementary Education at the University of South Dakota. Marjorie taught school in Miller, South Dakota, the Dewald and Vellek Rural Schools in Bon Homme County and the Avon Public Schools, finishing her teaching career after 32 years. Marjorie married Stanley Berndt on March 21, 1958, at Fort Ord, California. They lived in Ottawa, Illinois through Stanley's enlistment in the Army. Two daughters were born, Rebecca and Dianna. They moved to the family farm northeast of Avon, South Dakota, where they farmed and ranched until Stanley's death in 1994. Marjorie married Carl Estabrook in Plankinton, South Dakota in 1997, where they lived on Carl's ranch. They later moved to Mitchell, South Dakota. The two enjoyed polka and square dancing together. Marjorie was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and St. Leo's Altar Society. Marjorie's hobbies included gardening, making pottery, reading and taking short road trips with her family.

Survivors are her husband, Carl Estabrook of Mitchell; two daughters: Rebecca (Kenneth) Coyle of Yankton, South Dakota and Dianna (Steven) Heidinger of Las Vegas, Nevada; four grandchildren: Amy (Eric) Schofield, Scott (Lynda) Hento, Rachel and Vincent Coyle; two great-grandchildren: Grace and Devin Schofield; and five stepchildren: Dave, Mary and Carla Estabrook, Becky Thomas and Krystal Dockery.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley; infant daughter, Tracy; her parents; and two brothers: Leonard and Donnie Stulc.

Lillian Einrem, 1926-2012

The funeral service for Lillian A. Einrem, 86 of Springfield will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at the United Church of Christ in Springfield, with burial in the Springfield Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 Monday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield and resume Tuesday morning from 10 to noon.

Lillian Ameala Einrem, daughter of Nick and Clara (Baxter) Wynia, was born January 14, 1926 on a farm in the Norwegian Hills at Springfield, SD. She died Friday, August 3, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society in Tyndall. Lil attained the age of 86 years, six months and 21 days.

Lil attended Valley View Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Springfield High School in 1945. She attended Southern Normal for six months and earned her teaching certificate. She taught at Valley View and Running Water Country Schools and substituted at others.

Lil married Walter Einrem on December 28, 1946. Five children were blessed to their union. Besides raising her own family, she and Walt helped raise lots of other children. Lil worked at Lil’s Cafe and as a cook for many years at USD/S and the Mike Durfee Prison.

In 1991, Lil was bitten by a spider and then suffered a severe stroke. She was a fighter and worked hard to not let this stop her. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. Lil entered the Good Samaritan Society in Tyndall on June 6, 2012.

Lil will be remembered for her enjoyment of bowling and doing crossword puzzles. She was an excellent cook and had an amazing ability for putting babies down to sleep.

Thankful for having shared her life are her husband Walter of Springfield; children: James of Verdigree, NE; Jerry (died November 5, 2002) and wife Debbie of Springfield; Jan Hammond of Springfield; Jeff and wife Nicole of Tabor; and Jack and wife Susan of Hastings, NE; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; brother, Donald (Betty) of Springfield; sisters-in-law: MaryLou (Ray) Livingston of Yankton and Marcleen Wynia of Springfield; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Lillian was preceded in death by her son Jerry; her parents; and brother Gerben Wynia.


Lorene Eilmes, 1928-2008

Lorene Elvera Eilmes was born April 11, 1928 to George and Bertha (Ohling) Gerjets at Scotland, SD. She died on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home, Viborg, SD. She was baptized by Rev. A. Linneman and confirmed by Rev. A.B. Meyer in 1942 at Ebenezer Reformed Church of Scotland. Lorene married Ruben Eilmes on July 25th, 1947. They resided in rural Scotland where they farmed until 1992 when they moved to Scotland. Lorene worked as a CNA for the Good Samaritan Center, Scotland, and the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno, for nearly 30 years. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Scotland. She loved gardening, dancing, and spending time with family and friends. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ruben passed away in June, 2004 after which Lorene moved to Pine Lane Estates in Yankton, SD.

Lorene is survived by three daughters: Yvonne (Darrell) Swensen of Irene, Karen Sorgdrager of Sioux Falls, and Sheila (Ardon) Wek, of Freeman; a son-in-law, Milton Schnabel of Menno; grandchildren: Mark (Kerri) Swensen, Freeman, SD, Kari Swensen, Yankton, SD, Marty (Jodi) Swensen, Irene, SD, Janelle (Henry) Bender, and Emily Schnabel of Menno, SD, Frank Schnabel, Sioux Falls, SD, Steven (Joyce) Schnabel of Rapid City, SD, Karla (Danny) Washington and Becky Wek of Sioux Falls, SD; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Bliss Gerjets of Ortonville, MN, and Fernetta Strand of Centerville; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ruben, a daughter, Joyce Schnabel, four brothers: Albert, Frances, Ernest and Elmer, one sister, Henrietta Losing, three brothers-in-law, Eugene Eilmes, Herbert Eilmes and Christ Losing, two sisters-in-law, Lyla Gerjets and Delores Gerjets, and two grandchildren.


Anna Engel, 1872-1934

Miss Anna Engel was born at Alt-Denzig, South Russia, May 14, 1872, the daughter of Frederick and Catherine Engel. She passed away at Armour, S.D. October 13, 1934 at the age of 62 years, 4 months and 29 days.

She arrived at a living faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized at Danzig, S. Dak. by Rev. William Paul June 14, 1896. Some years later she became a member of Zion Baptist Church near Delmont, and when the family moved to Avon, she had the priviledge of membership here.

In 1892 she moved to Armour, where she was cared for in the home of relatives. She has been ailing for some years, and for the past 21 months was bedfast in the home of her sister, Mrs. H. E. Vert.

Three brothers: John, Theodore, and David and three sisters: Mrs. Amelia Martin, Mrs. Lydia LIndakgel, and Mrs. Katie Vert remain. Surely, the Lord doth all things well: He giveth, and He taketh away. Blessed by the name of the Lord!

A short funeral service was held October 16th at Clement's Funeral Home, Armour, at which the Rev. A. R. Boone officated.

At the Avon Baptist church the Rev. E. Broeckel gave a sermon in German based on I Timothy 5:8, and the pastor, the Rev. Benj. Schlipf spoke in English on II Cor 5:8, "What is Death to the Believer?" We express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved.


Arthur Elenbaas, 1885-1952

Mr. Arthur J. Elenbaas, 66, passed away at the Grossman Hospital on April 6, 1952. He had been a resident of Orange City since 1930, when he and his family moved from Springfield, S.D.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday in the Trinity Reformed Church.

Arthur J. Elenbaas was born at Zeeland, Michigan on Sept. 5, 1885. He was 66 years at the time of his death. He came to Springfield, S.D. when a young man and was married to Kate De Roos on March 13, 1913.

Three daughters were born to this union: Henrietta, Mrs. Cornie Hoekstra of Boyden, Iowa; Thelma, Mrs. John Palsma of Springfield, S.D.; Frances of Orange City. He is also survived by his widow, Mrs. Kate Ellenbaas; by his four sisters, Mrs. Bert Hartgerink, Mrs. Henry Baron, Mrs. Clarence Berends and Mrs. Arend Ketting all of Michigan, and by eight grandchildren. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.

Frances Elenbaas, 1923-1996

Miss Frances Elenbaas, age 73, of Orange City, passed away Thursday, May 16, 1996 at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 20, at 11:00 a.m., at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Donald De Glopper officiated. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.

Frances Arlene was born April 16, 1923, at Springfield, South Dakota, the daughter of Arthur and Kate (DeRoos) Elenbaas. When she was a teenager, her family moved to Orange City, where she attended Northwestern Academy and Junior College. She later received her Bachelor's degree from Northwestern College.

Frances was a teacher at Christian Elementary schools in Rock Valley, Sanborn, and Orange City. For the past ten years, she has lived at the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City.

Miss Elenbaas was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church and a member of The Bible League. She was active in mission projects, where she did much volunteer work.

Survivors include a sister and her husband, Thelma and John Palsma, of Springfield; a brother-in-law, Cornie Hoekstra, of Orange City; eleven nephews and nieces; 24 grandnephews and nieces, and 19 great-grandnephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Henrietta Hoekstra, and a nephew, Corwin Hoekstra.

Memorials are being directed to the Orange City Christian School and The Bible League.


Gary Engel, 1943-2015

Gary Lee Engel, 71, of Mitchell, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital ER of an apparent heart attack. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Reformed Church, Mitchell, with burial and military rites at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery, Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with family present, at Will Funeral Chapel, Mitchell.

Gary was born on June 16, 1943, in Avon, S.D., to Clark and Rosalind (Berndt) Engel. He graduated from Avon High School in 1961. He married Marge Thaler on Dec. 28, 1963, in Avon. He was stationed in the Philippines and Turkey in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1965. He worked for a year as a carpet layer for Reynolds Furniture in Mitchell.

In 1970, Gary graduated from the University of South Dakota/Springfield. He worked at Mitchell Technical Institute as an accounting instructor and financial aid director from 1970 to 1980. In 1980, he worked in a Mitchell accounting business until 1982, when he began teaching business and accounting classes at Mitchell High School. He retired in 2002. He then served as a substitute teacher at MHS.

Gary and Marge traveled around the United States and overseas to see friends and relatives. He took on carpet-laying and car-detailing jobs during the summer while he was teaching full time. Gary rarely missed going to coffee and liked to work on jigsaw puzzles. He enjoyed following the Cleveland Indians and Browns, and NASCAR racing, especially Dale Earnhardt. He took pride in the success of his students and in the MHS Future Business Leaders of America chapter. Gary had a strong faith in God and was devoted to Marge and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Marge, of Mitchell; one daughter, Angie (Nathan) Putnam, of Mitchell; one son, Scott (girlfriend Rosemary Lepiane) Engel, of Syracuse, N.Y.; two grandchildren: Matthew and Kaitlyn Putnam, both of Mitchell; a brother- and sister-in-law, Mel and Loo Thaler, of Sioux Falls/Florida; a sister-in-law, Bev Thaler, South San Francisco, Calif.; along with aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Frank and Sunshyne Thaler; and a brother-in-law, Nick Thaler.


Stanley Eggers, 1943-2014

Stanley R. Eggers, 71 of Grand Forks, ND passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014 in Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.

Stanley Robert Eggers was born March 28, 1943 in Avon, SD the son of Robert and Gladys (Goerndt) Eggers. Stanley was employed as the Area Supervisor for Metz Banking for 25 years and for several years with Ye Old Painters. Stanley enjoyed working in his garden every year with his grandpuppy, Tater, by his side. Also, he enjoyed rides in the country with his wife, watching University of North Dakota hockey games and college basketball. Stanley was “the popcorn man” making popcorn during hockey games at the Ralph Engelstad Arena. He and Debra enjoyed holiday gatherings with the Halverson family. Above all else, he enjoyed spending time with his step-daughters and grandpuppy, Tater.

Stanley will be greatly missed by his wife of 20 years, Debra; stepdaughters, Jodi Boehmer and Kimberly Newman, Grand Forks, ND; his sons, Brian and Mark, South Dakota; siblings, Fritz (Mary), Tampa, FL, Ethel (Don) Bernt, Canby, MN, Jane (George) Osborne, Zephyrhills, FL, David (Carol), Avon, SD, Marge (Pat) Pullin, Munster, TX, Mary Ann (Mrs. Dwayne) Rucktaeschel, Avon, SD; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Robert Seiner; a brother, Jim; a sister, Ruth Ann Crain and an infant sister, Georgia.

It was Stanley’s request that his body be bequeathed to the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences for education and research.

Rebecca "Becky" Elsberry, 1958-2015

Funeral Mass for Becky Elsberry, 56, of Tyndall, South Dakota will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 18, 2015 at St. Leo Catholic Church in Tyndall. Burial with military graveside honors will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19 in St. Leo Catholic Cemetery, Tyndall. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 17 at Goglin Funeral Home in Tyndall from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. wake service later that evening at the church. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Goglin Funeral Home of Tyndall.

Rebecca Ann Cooper Elsberry was born on July 22, 1958 at St. Mary's Hospital to Myron Ralph and Mary Frances Anderson Cooper. She was raised on her grandfather's ranch southwest of Fort Pierre. She learned her love of horses at an early age and was riding before she could walk. Becky attended Wentde Country School through the 8th grade. She graduated from Stanley County High School in 1976.

On a dare from her father, she joined the United States Army and received letters of commendation from both Basic Training and Advanced Individualized Training. She served a total of 14 years with the United States Army and the South Dakota National Guard. Becky was a proud, Paid Up For Life member of the Pike-Wagner Post #2 of Tyndall, South Dakota.

In 1984, she graduated from the Pierre School of Practical Nursing with an LPN license after passing her nursing boards. Then in 1998, with encouragement from her family , she returned to the USD School of Nursing and earned her Registered Nurses License. Earlier in 1996, she completed the Basic EMT course and worked for the Winner Ambulance Service. She had worked for ambulance services in Winner, Hot Springs, Sanborn County (Woonsocket), Campbell County (Herreid) and Tyndall. She was serving as the City's Ambulance Director at the time of her death.

She began her nursing career at St. Mary's hospital as an LPN and worked on the surgical/peds floor before transferring to Central Supply. She has worked both as an LPN and an RN at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center, as an RN at the Redfield Community Hospital, as an RN at the Linton Hospital in North Dakota, and finished her nursing career at St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall.

In 1989, she met Mike Elsberry and they were married in Fort Pierre on February 18, 1993. Together they have made their home in the South Dakota cities that mirror those of the various ambulance services she served. They have traveled to Korea, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Florida and several other places of interest as well.

Becky's hobbies included collecting Breyer horses (over 200 in all), reading, and being with family. Outside the home, she was known for her love of nursing and for working for the ambulance service. Taking care of people and serving the public were her real passions. She wanted to give a special shout out to her friends at the Tyndall Hospital and Tyndall Ambulance. She loved you all.

Becky passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 in her home having attained the age of 56 years, 10 months and 1 day.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Mike Elsberry of Tyndall; daughter, Kara Elsberry (Albert) of Winner; son, Eric Elsberry of Tyndall; and her puppies, Lady Kaye 2 and Molly Polly 2 (The Twos). Becky was part of a strong family which produced six siblings: Ken (Dawn) Cooper of Pierre, Patty Dunwoody of Java, Billie (Walt) Larson of Pierre, Deb Winckler (Brian Bachmann) of Pierre Chuck (Deb) Cooper of Pierre, and Mike (Tara) Cooper of Tripp. She was also extremely proud of her two grandchildren Karessa and Kyle Elsberry of Winner.

Becky was preceded in death by her son Michael, parents, both maternal and paternal grandparents and her beloved Lady Kaye 1 and Molly Polly 1.


Betty Erling, 1923-2006

Betty J. Erling, age 82, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, SD. She was the widow of Charles Erling. Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 7, 2006 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Richard Fylling officiating. Interment in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls, SD. There was no visitation or reviewal. Memorials may be designated to the Kim Erling Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Betty Jane Erling, the daughter of William and Eva (Newell) Holleman was born on May 9, 1923 in Avon, South Dakota. She grew up in Avon and graduated from Avon High School. She then graduated from Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Yankton, SD in 1944, and then joined the Army. After her discharge, she went to USD at Vermillion, and then went to Northwestern School of Anesthesiology in Chicago. After graduating, she was married to Charles John Erling on June 29, 1950 in Avon, South Dakota. The couple lived in Vermillion, where Charles got his Masters degree and attended Law School. They moved to Pierre and then to Watertown. Charles Erling passed away on January 23, 1954. Betty worked at Memorial Medical Center for 32 years before retiring. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her daughter, Kim.

She is survived by her friend, Marilyn Arnold of Watertown.


Evelyn Ewert, 1931-2014

Now in the presence of the Lord, Evelyn Ann Ewert went to be with Him on Thursday, March 6, 2014. Evelyn was born on August 3, 1931 in Avon, South Dakota to the late Peter and Anna (Schultz) Boese. Evelyn was predeceased by 5 siblings: Ralph Boese, Milton Boese, Don Boese, Ardis Woolf, and Phyllis Bultman.

Evelyn married Reuben Ewert on March 19, 1955. Together they served as youth sponsors at Calvary Baptist Church, Midland, Michigan for 19 years. Their ministry influenced the lives of hundreds of teens. For most of the last 30 years, they served in evangelism traveling the states and many countries in Europe. Evelyn enjoyed sewing, gardening, and crocheting.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Reuben Ewert of Durham, NC; four daughters – Trina Thiry (Andy) of Inman, SC; Charlene Ewert of Pensacola, Florida; Renae Finley (Rick) of Timberlake, NC; Tonia Ebert (Aaron) of Pensacola, Florida; 11 grandchildren; Nathan Thiry (Julie), Jeremy Thiry (Heidi), Mark Thiry, Matthew Thiry (Sarah), Jessica Weitz (Tyler), Joshua Finley (Aimee), Karissa Ray (Caleb), Kaleb Finley, Jacob Finley, Tyler Ebert and Kari Ebert. 7 great-grandchildren; Elijah Thiry, Levi Thiry, Eliana Thiry, Lucas Thiry, Jacob Thiry, Addie Thiry, and Melanie Thiry, two sisters, Huldah Gerard of Knoxville, TN; and Norma Warner of Grand Rapids, MI.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church. Dr. Rick Finley will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Jeremy Thiry, Mark Thiry, Matthew Thiry, Joshua Finley, Jacob Finley, Tyler Ebert, Andy Thiry and Aaron Ebert. Honorary pallbearers will be Tyler Weitz and Bob Koster.

Walter Einrem, 1927-2015

Walter Joseph Einrem, 88 of Springfield, son of Jospeh M. and Martha (Dykstra) Einrem, was born July 11, 1927 on a farm west of Springfield. He died Friday, August 7, 2015 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall. Walt attained the age of 88 years and 28 days.

His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 10, 2015 at the United Church of Christ, with burial in the Springfield Cemetery. VIsitation will be Sunday from 3 to 5, with the family present from 4 to 5 at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield.

Walt attended country school in Bon Homme through the eighth grade. Walt married Lillian Ameala Wynia on December 28, 1946. Five children were blessed to their union. Besides raising their own family, he and Lil helped raise lots of other children.

Walt farmed, drove the ferry boat, fished and trapped. The family later moved into Springfield, and he began working for the Bon Homme County Highway Department until he retired in 1992.

Walt will be remembered for his enjoyment of fishing and spoiling his grandchildren with ice cream.

Thankful for having shared his life are his children: Jim and wife Kerrin of Verdigre, NE; Jerry (died November 5, 2002) and wife Debbie of Springfield; Jan Hammond of Springfield; Jeff and wife Nicole of Tabor; and Jack and wife Susan of Hastings, NE; 13 grandchildren: Jamey Einrem, Sandy Schipper, Jessica Semler, Nick Einrem, Julie, Jen and Joe Hammond, Sam Gullikson, Abby and Jozie Einrem, Sarah Waldron, Melissa Milliken and Marie Behrends; 23 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Walt was preceded in death by his wife on August 3, 2012; his son Jerry; parents; and two brothers: Elmer “Tub” and Bob.


Kathleen Elic, 1951-2015

Kathleen Elic, 63, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away July 1, 2015 in Shawnee, Kansas.

She was born July 19, 1951 in Yankton, South Dakota, daughter of Milo Joseph and Zdenka Ann Pavlish.

She is survived by: her mother; one sister, Peggy Pavlish; two nephews, Cory and Jason Schortzman; one niece, Amy Teply; and eight grand-nephews and nieces.

Kathy was preceded in death by her father and her husband, Ronald Elic.

Memorial Services will be held at 7:00 pm, Friday, July 17, 2015 at Antioch Family Worship Center, 5201 Antioch Road, Overland Park, KS 66202.

Warren Engelbrecht, 1929-2015

Warren J. Engelbrecht, 86, of Rapid City passed away on Monday, May 18, 2015 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Warren was born February 4, 1929 in Blackwell, OK to Henry and Rose (Hawk) Engelbrecht. He married Maryann Britton on March 26, 1951 in Tyndall, SD. Warren joined the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1953. Warren and Maryann relocated to Rapid City in 1953. He worked at Sooper Dooper for 20 years retiring as the Manager.

Warren was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife Maryann of Rapid City; his son, David Engelbrecht of San Diego, CA; his brother, Don (Georgette) Engelbrecht of St. Paul, MN and his sister, Lois (Norman) Marrs of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his son, Barry and his parents.

A Rosary will be at 9:45am on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 with a Memorial Service at 10am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral in Rapid City with Father Ed Vanorny as Celebrant. Inurnment with full military honors will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.


Eldora Ellinger, 1925-2016

Eldora Naomi Ellinger, age 90, of Scotland, South Dakota, died Thursday, February 4, 2016 at Oakview Terrace in Freeman, South Dakota.

Memorial services are 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 6 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Rev. Dan Flyger and Rev. Charles Asche officiating. Private family burial will take place at the Rosehill Cemetery in Scotland. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Pallbearers are her 11 grandchildren: Jim Ellinger, Lonnie Ellinger, Machelle Battmer, Jason Ellinger, Zach Mottice, Sarah Henrichs, Katie Larson, Jeff Ellinger, Becky Palugyay, Chris Asche and Nathan Ellinger.

Eldora was born October 3, 1925 in Lesterville, South Dakota to Henry and Lea (Weidenbach) Schafer. She attended North Star Country School in rural Lesterville and graduated from Scotland High School in 1943. After school, Eldora worked in the War Rations Office in Yankton. On May 14, 1944, she married Cecil Ellinger at St. Petersburg Congregational Church in rural Lesterville. After their marriage, they farmed south of Scotland and raised their family. Eldora loved taking care of her home and living on the farm. She loved cooking and baking, especially for family gatherings. She enjoyed working outside in the yard, garden and flower beds. Early in her life, Eldora committed herself to the Lord. Her faith was incredibly important and provided her with a clear vision. Eldora lived her Christian faith in how she treated others and in how she loved her family. She was involved in her church and was a Sunday School teacher for over 25 years. She was also a member of the Gideon Auxiliary. Eldora enjoyed going to her grandchildren’s activities and later in life, enjoyed numerous trips with her husband. In July 2008, she became a resident of Oakview Terrace in Freeman.

Eldora is survived by her husband of 71 years, Cecil Ellinger of Scotland; six children: Steve Ellinger of Norwood, MO, Peg (Matt) Mottice of Mineral City, OH, Ted (Diane) Ellinger of Freeman, Pat (Charles) Asche of Sioux Falls, Greg (Roxanne) Ellinger of Lesterville, and Deb Ellinger of Watertown, SD; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; brother, Jerry (Donna) Schafer of Vermillion, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

Eldora was preceded in death by her parents; daughter-in-law, Wanda Ellinger; sister and brother-in law, Lou Etta and Edward Lipkie; sister-in-law and husband, Fern and Morris Gran and two brothers in infancy.


Lucille "Lucy" Edgar, 1930-2014

Lucille "Lucy" Edgar was born on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1930 in Scotland, South Dakota to Mary and Lawrence Moran. She was the oldest of 8 children. She moved with her family to Sioux City, Iowa when she was in the 8th grade. She attended Luton High School, where she played on the basketball team and she graduated from Central High School in 1948.

She met the love of her life, Jack Edgar on "the bridge" in Sioux City. She caught his eye and he gave her a whistle. They were married on March 8, 1949 and made their home in Sioux City where they had 3 children, Debbie, Kirk and Mark. Lucille was a homemaker and Jack was a mail carrier.

In 1961 they moved the family to Littleton, Colorado. Lucille worked many years for the Sheridan School District as a secretary and Jack was a letter carrier for the Littleton Post Office.

Lucille was a woman of quiet faith and was always willing to do anything to help others. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Sheridan Colorado.

Lucille was a talented decorator, writer and artist. She loved to write poetry, to paint and do arts and crafts. She wrote the antiques column "ASK LUCY" for 15 years for the Littleton Independent and taught adult education classes on antique collecting for many years. She was an antique dealer, appraiser and collector.

She was the proud grandmother to 8 grandchildren; Tyson, Whitney, Matt, Abi, Allie, Jessica, Natalie and Mandy. She was the great-grandmother of 5; Brayden, Nolan, Camden, Owen and Faith. Her home was a place of much happiness and joy where you could always find at least one grandchild spending the night, being spoiled and eating too many candy bars or homemade chocolate chip cookies.

She had a wonderful full life that revolved around her family that she cherished. She leaves behind a legacy of honesty, integrity, generosity, much laughter and love.

We loved her dearly and will miss her greatly until we are reunited with her in heaven.

Survived by children: Debbie (Alan) Kube, Mark (Becky) Edgar, Kirk Edgar - brothers: Keith (Carol) Moran, Chuck (Pat) Moran - sisters: Betty (Jim) Moser, Sandy (Melvin) Ronfeldt. Preceded in death by husband: Jack Edgar, sisters: Genevieve Hoth and Charlotte Nolan; infant sister: Veronica; infant granddaughter: Jessica.

Blanche Eisenbach, 1921-2016

Blanche Merkwan Eisenbach, beloved wife and mother, died Jan. 28, 2016 at age 95 in Morgan Hill, Calif.

Blanche was born on a farm outside of Tabor, S.D., to Sophia Korton Merkwan and Mike Merkwan. The premature death of her mother and loss of the family farm during the Great Depression brought her and her siblings Marie, Dan, Carson, and Bud, to Yankton in about 1934.

At age 20, she left for Chicago to find employment in 1940, and she worked on engines for B-29 bombers at the Ford plant. Blanche met her future husband, Bernard Eisenbach of Chicago, at the famed Green Mill nightclub in 1946, after he was honorably discharged from the Navy. They married in 1947.

They raised two children, Jan and Deborah, on the north side of Chicago near the Wrigley Field ballpark. Blanche managed the family’s apartment building, and was tolerant and open-minded in dealing with and renting to the neighborhood’s diverse population. She became a community activist who helped found one of the first neighborhood associations in the Wrigleyville area.

Blanche was a tough and loving mother who taught her children to respect people for who they are. She was beloved among her friends for her listening skills, kindness and generosity, empathy, wisdom, and practicality. She was renowned as a wonderful cook who incorporated the diverse ethnic cuisines of her friends and neighbors into her home cooking. She also was a fine gardener.

Although Blanche had only a grade school education, she was shrewd and intelligent and was an avid reader of biographies as well as cookbooks, though never fiction. She loved opera.

In retirement, she and Bernie moved to Yankton to spend time with her beloved brothers and their families. Later, they moved to San Jose, Calif. to be with their son. She and her husband were loving partners and close companions to the end. Bernie died in 2001.

Blanche is survived by her two children, Jan Eisenbach of Gilroy, Calif., and Deborah Mihm of Chicago, and by the extended Merkwan family in Yankton and across the country.

As per her wishes, her ashes will be scattered in San Francisco Bay, like her husband’s. The family will plant fruit trees in Blanche’s memory.


Cecil Ellinger, 1923-2016

Cecil Robert Ellinger, age 92, of Scotland, South Dakota, died Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Good Samaritan Center in Scotland.

Memorial services are 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23 at Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Rev. Charles Asche and Rev. Dan Flyger officiating. Private family burial will take place at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Scotland. Visitation with the body present is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service on Wednesday. Cecil was born December 17, 1923 near Scotland, South Dakota to Pete and Emily (Kahle) Ellinger. He grew up on a farm south of Scotland and graduated from Scotland High School in 1941. On May 14, 1944, Cecil married Eldora Schafer at St. Petersburg Congregational Church in rural Lesterville, South Dakota. After their marriage, they lived and farmed south of Scotland. In addition to farming, Cecil also enjoyed buying and selling cattle. In 1972, he became an independent insurance agent and broker. Cecil enjoyed traveling and was an avid sports fan of Scotland High School. His faith was the central part of his life and he was very active in his church. He was also an active member of the Gideons and participated in the visitation program at Mike Durfee State Prison. Cecil was an honest, hardworking, family oriented man who loved to visit with others. He never knew a stranger; they were just a friend he hadn’t met yet.

Cecil is survived by six children: Steve Ellinger of Norwood, MO, Peg (Matt) Mottice of Mineral City, OH, Ted (Diane) Ellinger of Freeman, Pat (Charles) Asche of Sioux Falls, Greg (Roxanne) Ellinger of Lesterville, and Deb Ellinger of Watertown, SD; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Jerry (Donna) Schafer of Vermillion, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

Cecil was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Eldora Ellinger; his parents; daughter-in-law, Wanda Ellinger; sister, Fern (Morris) Gran; and a sister-in-law, LouEtta (Edward) Lipkie.


John Engel, 1909-1983

John A. Engel was born October 27, 1909 on a farm north of Avon and passed away November 6, 1983. He was the son of Joseph und Elizabeth (Rueb) Engel. He received his education in the Avon pubic schools and at the University of South Dakota at Vermilion. He taught school at Avon for several years and then attended Law School at USD. He was a life-long lawyer in Avon.

On June 30, 1939, he was married to Thelma Mitchell at Vermillion. Three daughters were born into their home, Patricia, Mrs. James Odens of Springfield, SD; Mary Jane, Mrs. Ronald Hewett of Winona, MN; and Jan, Mrs. Kenneth Johnson of Brandon, SD.

John Engel served in the Navy in WWII. He was active in politics in Avon and in the State. He served as head of the Democratic Party in the 60s. He served on the highway commission under Gov. Herseth. He also served in the SD House of Representatives for two terms in the 60's He was the Mayor of Avon for a number of years and also a member of the Lions Club.

About four years ago he made a Confession of his faith in Christ at the First Presbyterian Church of Avon.

In recent years he was in poor health. He lived the last year at the Good Samaritan home in Tyndall.

John is survived by his three daughters and by six grandchildren, also by two sisters: Mrs. Pauline Hubner of Tyndall and Mrs. Clarence (Ella) Corron of Hemet, CA; by two brothers: Charles of Fremont, NB and Harold of Wagner, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two brothers.

Services were held Wednesday, November 9, 1983 at 10:30 a.m. at the first Presbyterian Church, Avon, Rev. William Miller, officiating. Music by Rosalee Sternhagen, soloist and Sharon Kozel organist. Casketbearers were Tom Alberts, Otto Pudwill, Allen Marek, Clark Engel, Cliff Hubner, and Charles Korman. Honorary bearers were Henry Holleman, Hank Sattler, Fred Reister, Robert Haenfler, Chester Steckler Glenn Peterson, Rev. Charles Kruse, Neil Hornstra, Harold Oorlog, Cecil Mc Lane and Ernie Hento. Burial was in the Presbyterian Cemetery with Grave Graveside Rites, Post #150, American Legion.


Evelyn Evans, 1941-2016

Evelyn R. Evans age 74, of Mitchell, SD died Sunday, June 5, 2016 at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at the Will Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery in Lake Andes, SD.

Evelyn Rose Evans was born December 16, 1941 in Niobrara, NE to Frank and Elsie (Moticka) Wirth. She grew up on a farm by Lesterville, SD, attended country school for 8 years, attending Tabor High School for 2 years and Yankton High School for 2 years graduating in 1959 with high honors with a full academic scholarship to Northern State College.

Evelyn was united in marriage to Stephen H. Evans on June 17, 1967 in Yankton, SD.

She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Special Education from Northern State College in Aderdeen, SD and received her Master’s in Special Education from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD in 1994. During her teaching career she taught country school for 2 years. She then went on to teach elementary education in Wakonda, Sioux Falls, Yankton, Armour, Corsica. In 1990, Steve and Evelyn moved to Mitchell where she taught at Longfellow for 17 years. Evelyn was a member of the S.D. Education Association and the Mitchell Education Association.

Evelyn enjoyed embroidering, making baby blankets; she has given over 100 to family, nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. Her greatest pleasures in life was receiving the Longfellow Elementary Teacher of the year in 2005, 17 years at Longfellow school in Mitchell and spending time with her grandchildren, she thoroughly loved every student she taught.

Grateful for sharing her life are her husband Stephen H. Evans of Mitchell, SD; sons Kevin H. (Lisa) Evans of Yankton, SD, Jason T. (Holly Jo) Evans of Madison, SD and Jerad F. (Holly Ann) Evans of Chamberlain, SD; sisters Janice (Larry) Novak of Verdigre, NE and Joann Berntson of Yankton, SD.; 8 grandchildren - Brandy, Curtis, Garret, Elijah, Parker, Jett, Hayden, and Kinsey; 3 great-grandchildren - Karli, Remington, Tobias; several nieces and nephews and 10 brother-in-law’s and sister-in-law’s.

Elsie Eggleston, 1918-2005

Elsie H. Eggleston, age 87 of Menno passed away Saturday, December 31, 2005 at the Menno-Olivet Care Center, Menno, SD after a four-year battle with a disabling stroke.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at the Olivet United Methodist Church, Olivet, SD with Rev. Chuck Asche and Rev. Mary Lee Lint officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, SD. Visitations will be from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2005 at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Anthony Brown, Steve Flett, Randy Broders, Lee Allen Broders, Daryl Rippentrop, Joe Rokusek, and Mark Schaeffer. Elsie was born to Robert and Bessie (Grim) Cary on May 6, 1918 on their farm north of Olivet. She graduated from Olivet High School. On November 30, 1939, she was united in marriage to Elgin Eggleston on her parents’ farm. She was a true farmer's wife, working and helping with the farm all her married life.

Elsie is survived by her daughter, Barbara McCool, Olivet, SD; two grandsons: Floyd (Barb) Wagner, Hartford, SD and Michael Wagner, Olivet, SD; four grandchildren, five step grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren; two sisters: Edna Brown, Brandon, SD and Lois Rokusek, Scotland, SD and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents Bob and Bessie Cary, her beloved husband, Elgin, two brothers-in-law: Gene Brown and Bill Rokusek.


Doris Eckert, 1932-2016

Doris Eckert, 84, of Avon, died Saturday, July 30, 2016 at her home in Avon.

Services will be 11 AM, Thursday, August 4, 2016 at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel in Avon. Burial is in the Gramkow-Vesper Lutheran Cemetery, rural Avon. Visitation is one hour prior to services.

Doris Mae Eckert was born July 26, 1932 at Dupree, South Dakota the daughter of Emil and Viola (Patterson) Ehresmann.

Doris married Victor Eckert at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Tripp on January 1, 1954. They lived in Idaho, Montana and Oregon where Victor worked on building dams before moving to Avon in 1968. Doris worked at the leather factory in Avon and also babysat.

Doris will be remembered for her love of fishing, hunting, sewing, crocheting, gardening and she did lots of canning.

Thankful for having shared her life are her two sons: Mark (Brenda) of Chuckey, TN, Bruce and friend Leslie of Wimauma, FL; daughter, Cindy (Wes) Sassaman of Avon; eight grandchildren: Chad Anderson of Wagner, Michelle (Jeff) Bathke of Mitchell, Janelle Vaughan of Mitchell, Amy (Ryan) Townsend of Madison, Casey Sassaman of Avon, Tyler (Julia) Sassaman of Wagner, Richard (Cynthia) Eckert of Wimauma, FL and Andrea (Jeffrey) Jackson of Wesley Chapel, FL; 16 great grandchildren and one on the way; and several cousins and relatives.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Victor on October 19, 2013; parents; two brothers Herman and Roger Ehresmann; sister Joan Ehresmann; sister-in-law Loretta Houska; and three brothers-in-law: Rodney, Earnest and Albert Eckert.


Frank Ogan, 1919-2011

Frank A. Ogan, age 91, of Tyndall, SD, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011 at Avera St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall, SD. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 AM, Thursday, March 17, 2011 at the Tyndall Presbyterian Church in Tyndall, SD with Rev. Lorney Van Gerpen officiating. Military Rites provided by Kortan-Hatwan American Legion Post #183, Tabor, SD. Burial will be at a later date in the Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitations will be from 2-6 PM, Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at the Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel, Tyndall. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Frank Andrew Ogan was born to Ernest and Mary (Sawyer) Ogan on October 31, 1919 in Palouse, Washington. Frank attended school in Palouse, WA. He joined the United States Navy on October 23, 1940 and was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He spent four years (to the day) on a repair ship, U.S.S. Dobbin. He was discharged from the Navy on December 16, 1946.

Frank married Esther Sutera on December 16, 1949 in the First Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, CA. Frank worked in an Auto Body shop until 1980. He then worked for State Farm Insurance for 6 1/2 years. Frank and Esther live in La Crescenta, CA for over 48 years. They moved to Santa Maria, CA and then in 2002, they moved to Tyndall, SD. Frank and Esther loved to camp and he loved to fish.

His memory will be cherished by his nieces and nephews; his in-laws: Eugene and Melva Sutera, Mabel Winningham, Ruth Pinkley, Florence Sutera, Shirley Sutera, Dan and Helen Sutera and special friend, Helen Hovorka.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Esther in 2004, his daughter, Sara, at the age of 33, his Father, Ernest, Mother, Mary, three brothers: Lawrence, Kenneth, Jack and a sister, Grace.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 pm Thursday, January 14, 2010 at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield, with burial in the Emanuel Cemetery, rural Springfield. Visitation will be 12 noon to 6 pm Wednesday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield, followed by a 6 pm prayer service.

Annie Odens, daughter of Peter and Dora (Vander Lei) Dykstra, was born June 20, 1919 at Running Water, SD. She died Sunday, January 10, 2010 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. Annie attained the age of 90 years, six months and 22 days.

Annie attended school at Running Water through the eighth grade. She spent her younger years working for others in their homes.

Annie married Hessel Odens on October 1, 1941 at rural Springfield. They lived west of Springfield near Perkins and then in 1946, they moved to a farm northwest of Springfield. Together they farmed and cared for their five children. Hessel passed away on January 31, 1989. Annie continued to live on the farm until 1999, when she moved into Avon.

Annie was a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield, having joined in 1940. She also was a former member of Willing Workers.

Annie enjoyed spending time collecting stamps, saving recipes, growing flowers, especially tulips and iris, and bird watching. She had a real knack for growing African Violets. Annie spent her last years in her own home. She enjoyed anyone who came to visit and especially Sunday coffee time with family.

Thankful for having shared her life are her children: Karen Wesselink of Hull, IA; Marlene Wittmeier of Avon; Jean Kolecka and husband Tom of Avon; Harold and wife Jeanne of Wakefield, NE; and Donald and wife Coreen of Springfield; 9 grandchildren; four step grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers: Jayson and Darwin, both of Avon; four sisters: Jessie Boersma of Springfield; Marie Vander Veen of Wakefield, NE; Mabel Ludens and husband Robert of Sioux Falls; and Ruth Olivier of Corsica; and many nieces and nephews.

Annie was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sons-in-law: Delmar Wesselink and Eugene Wittmeier; and three brothers: Raymond, Donald and Andrew.


Loren Odens, 1919-2010

Loren Odens, 50, of Springfield Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield, followed by burial in the Emmanuel Cemetery, rural Springfield. Visitation will be held Monday, November 12, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Springfield, SD. A Prayer service will follow at 7:00 p.m. at the Emmanuel Reformed Church, Springfield, SD.

Loren Douglas Odens, son of Burnell and Georgianna (DeRoos) Odens, was born February 24, 1957 in Yankton, SD. He died unexpectedly Friday, November 9, 2007 at Avera St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall, SD. Loren attained the age of 50 years, eight months and 14 days.

Loren attended Equal Rights Country School through the sixth grade and then Springfield Public School. He graduated from Springfield High School and attended USD/S for two years, receiving his Associates Degree in Diesel Mechanics and Parts Management. Following graduation, Loren worked at Scott Supply in Mitchell for nine years. Loren married Donna Jo Zweber on May 30, 1981 at the First Reformed Church in Mitchell, SD. Four children were born to their union. Loren and his family returned to Springfield in 1987, when he took over operations for the family farm. Donna Jo died unexpectedly on November 14, 2006.

Loren made confession of faith at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield on July 11, 1977. While living in Mitchell, he was a member of the First Reformed Church for nine years. Loren later transferred back to the Emmanuel Reformed Church, where he served as an elder and deacon. He was a former church choir member, and for years arranged for special music at the church. Loren also was a member of the Bon Homme County Easter Cantata and the Bon Homme County Sunday School Association. He was most recently involved in a bible study with the Watertown First Baptist Church family.

As an outgoing and spirited individual with a fondness for social interaction, Loren will be remembered for visiting and enjoying spending quality time with old and cherished friends, as well as meeting and conversing with new people. He was a caring and compassionate husband and devoted father, and loved every moment he spent with his family. Loren and his wife, Donna, loved attending their children's sporting, choral and band events, and was perhaps their biggest cheerleader. He treasured his children and was so proud of their accomplishments, striving to assist them to become their very best.

Donna Odens, 1953-2006

The funeral service for Donna Jo Odens, 53 of Springfield will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 18, 2006 at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield, with burial in the Emmanuel Reformed Cemetery, rural Springfield. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield, followed by a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.

Donna Jo Odens, daughter of Willard and JoAnn (Kaup) Zweber, was born September 19, 1953 in Hoven, SD. She died Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at Avera St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall following an automobile accident. Donna Jo attained the age of 53 years, one month and 25 days. Donna graduated second in her class at Hoven High School in 1971. Following graduation, she attended Lake Area Tech in Watertown, receiving her medical transcription certification. Donna later earned her Practical Nurse License (LPN) and finally her Registered Nurse (RN) degree from Dakota Wesleyan University. Donna married Loren Odens on May 30,1981 at the First Reformed Church in Mitchell. Four children were born to their union.

Donna worked at the Methodist Hospital in Mitchell from 1981 to 1987. The family moved to Springfield where she worked for the Springfield Clinic for several years. Donna left her nursing career for several years to raise her family and work with her husband. She was the secretary of the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield for three years. Donna worked at St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall the last five years as a medical transcriptionist.

Donna was an active member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church where she served as the second Grade Sunday School teacher for 12 years. She served as MIC co-leader and was the VBS craft leader and teacher for several years. Donna was also a member of God's Garden Circle.

Donna will be remembered for her enjoyment of gardening, canning, doing crafts, decorating her home, and collecting Depression Cobalt Blue dishes. She had a resilient, quiet strength and willingly gave of herself, always thinking of others first.

Thankful for having shared her life are her husband, Loren of rural Springfield, and their children: Lynn of Omaha, NE; Brian of Brookings; Jill of Wayne, NE and Laura of Lincoln, NE; her father, Willard Zweber and brother, Frank and wife, Carol all of Hoven; sister, Shirley Brown and husband, Tim and their family of Rio Rancho, NM; father-in-law, Burnell Odens of Springfield; brother-in-law, Bruce Odens and wife, Nola and their family of Roseville, CA; other relatives and many friends.

Donna was preceded in death by her mother, JoAnn Zweber on November 8, 2000 and her mother-in-law, Georgia Anna Odens on December 25, 2001.


Georgia Odens, 1926-2001

Georgia Anna Odens, 74, Springfield, died Tuesday (Dec. 25, 2001) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral service is at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Emmanuel Reformed Church, Springfield. Burial will be in the Emanuel Cemetery, rural Springfield. Visitation is from 1-6 p.m. today (Thursday) with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Springfield. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m.-noon Friday.

She was born Dec. 26, 1926, on a farm west of Springfield, to Jacob and Jennie (Klein) DeRoos. She went to country school in the Springfield area, graduated from Springfield High School and then went on to Southern State College. She taught country schools for seven years at Running Water, Equal Rights, Perkins and Drake Rural Schools. She married Burnell Odens June 21, 1949 at Emmanuel Reformed Church. Together they farmed for over 50 years, moving into Springfield in February of 1972.

She made confession of her Christian faith on April 24, 1945, at the Emmanuel Reformed Church and was a faithful member all of her life. She was an active member of Willing Workers Society and Guild, where she enjoyed the fellowship and being with people of her age.

She will be remembered for her enjoyment of music. She played piano for a quartet that her dad sang in and she also sang in the Bon Homme County Easter Cantata for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Burnell, Springfield; two sons: Loren (Donna Jo), Springfield; and Bruce (Nola), Roseville, CA; four grandchildren; two brothers: Gelvin DeRoos, Urbandale, Iowa; and Roger DeRoos, Seattle, Wash.; and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter.


Hattie Odens, 1921-2001

Hattie Odens, 80, Springfield, died Sunday (Sept. 16, 2001) at the Good Samaritan Center, Tyndall.

Funeral service is at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Emmanuel Reformed Church, Springfield. Burial will be in the Emmanuel Cemetery, rural Springfield. Visitation is from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday followed by a prayer service at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Springfield.

She was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Osceola County, Iowa, to Joe and Clara (Schaafsma) Bonsma. She attended school through the eighth grade in Osceola County. She made confession of her faith at the First Reformed Church, Bigelow, Minn. on Dec. 31, 1939. She married Joe Odens Feb. 14, 1940, at Bigelow. They moved to a farm in the Springfield area. Her husband died Feb. 21, 1958. She moved into Springfield in 1966. She was a full-time mother. She also worked at St. Mary's School and CR Industries, Springfield.

She was a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church where she was a member of the Willing Workers and Ladies Aid circles. She was also a Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, needlework and gardening. She had a large variety of house plants.

She is survived by six children: Clarice (Jim) Adema, Mitchell; Jerome (Donna) Odens, Springfield; Richard (Carolyn) Odens, Harrisburg; Roseann (Marvin) Brinkman, Ramona; John (Joanne) Odens, Ferndale, Wash.; and Joleen (Sam) Bursell, Herminston, Ore.; 24 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, four brothers and one sister.


Minnie Odens, 1919-2007

Funeral service for Minnie Odens, 87, of Springfield will be 10:30 am Friday, March 16, 2007, at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield, with burial in the Emanuel Cemetery, rural Springfield. Visitation will be at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield from noon to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by a prayer service.

Minnie Odens, daughter of Cornelius and Jennie (Brandsma) Vander Veen, was born June 24,1919, on a farm in Charles Mix County, South Dakota. She died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Center in Tyndall. Minnie attained the age of 87 years, eight months and 20 days.

Minnie was raised on a farm near Springfield and attended Equal Rights Country School. As a young adult, she worked as a grocery store clerk in Springfield.

Minnie married Ode Odens on July 26,1949, at Springfield.They lived on the family farm near Perkins all of their married life. To their union eight children were born. Ode died July 28,1993. Minnie became a resident of the Springfield Assisted Living Center in 1999 and transferred to the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center on February 24, 2004.

Minnie made confession of her faith at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield on September 25,1935, where she was a member all of her life. She taught catechism and was an active member of the Worship & Service Circle.

Minnie enjoyed her friends and family and often hosted family gatherings in her home. She enjoyed traveling to visit friends and family and, in the course of her life, was able to visit both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Minnie was first and foremost a loving farm wife, mother and grandmother and will be remembered for her enjoyment of gardening, crocheting, and embroidery work for her family and others. She also loved to read and weekly wrote her children letters.

Her memory is cherished by her children: David and wife, Diane of Brookings; Janice Haan and husband, Floyd of Pollock; Kenneth of Springfield; Rachel Stearns and husband, Dave of Hartford; Dennis and wife, Dawn of St. Peter, MM; William of Springfield; Harvey and wife, Karen of Sioux Falls; and Melvin and wife, Michele of Willmar, MN; 20 grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Minnie was preceded in death by her husband; parents; four brothers: Henry, Case, Pier and Sears Vander Veen; and three sisters: Tena DenOuden, Alice Ebeling and Bessie DeGraaf.


Philip Odens, 1919-2003

Philip Isaac Odens, 84, Springfield, died Saturday (Aug. 16, 2003) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Emmanuel Reformed Church, Springfield, with burial with military honors in the Emmanuel Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. today (Monday) at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Springfield, followed by a prayer service.

He was born May 3, 1919, on a farm near Lakeview in Todd County to Boldewyn and Anthonetta (Risseeuw) Odens. He came to the Springfield area with his family when he was two years old. He attended Hitt Country School through the eighth grade. Phil served in the U.S. Army from 1940 through 1945 during World War II. He married Eva D. Kastein on April 22, 1943, at the Emmanuel Reformed Church parsonage, rural Springfield. Four children were born to their union. Phil and Eva retired from farming and moved into Springfield in 1970. He owned and operated Phil's TV & Appliance & Service until 1983.

Phil became a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church on Jan. 14, 1940. He also was a member of the Dwight Wood American Legion Post 132 since 1945. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, pitching horseshoes, pitching in softball leagues and games, and playing pinochle.

He is survived by his wife, Eva; children: Anita (Laurence) Zastrow, Pierre; Verald (Gloria), Springfield; and Ellen (Ray) Thorpe, Aberdeen; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother: Gary (Sandy), Avon; three sisters: Winifred Kastein, Marjorie (Harold) Ludens and Beverly (Robert) Jelsma, all of Springfield; four sisters-in-law: Evelyn Odens, Alice Odens, Gertrude Wesseling and Ruth Tolsma; former daughter-in-law: Rita Odens; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one son, his parents, two brothers, two twin great-grandsons and three brothers-in-law.


Robert Odens, 1949-2002

Robert Dean Odens, 53, of Evansdale, Iowa, and formerly of Springfield, died Tuesday (April 2, 2002) at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Emmanuel Reformed Church, Springfield. Burial will be in the Emanuel Cemetery, rural Springfield, with military honors. Visitation is from 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m. today (Friday) with the family present from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Springfield.

He was born March 16, 1949, at Tyndall, to Philip and Eva (Kastein) Odens. He attended Perkins Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Springfield High School in 1967. He served in the United States Air Force from Jan. 20, 1969, through Jan. 19, 1973. In April 1970, he married Rita Stewart in California. He had worked for Beringer Oil Company in Tyndall and the Oil Company that Dan Nelson and Gene Lang managed. He was employed with PCI Construction in Waterloo, Iowa, at the time of his illness.

He will be remembered for his enjoyment of rodeos, Nascar races and pool and foosball leagues. He was a very good mechanic.

Survivors include two daughters: Kimberly (Eric) Odens, Sioux Falls, and Jill Odens, Brandt; two grandchildren; his parents of Springfield; one brother, Verald (Gloria), Springfield; two sisters: Anita (Lary) Zastrow, Pierre, and Ellyn (Raymond) Thorpe, Aberdeen; 12 nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.


Jean Olson, 1954-2009

Jean Ann (Breen) Olson was born Dec. 2, 1954, to Lawrence M. and Viola L. Breen in Rapid City, S.D. She was baptized at Calvary Lutheran Church, with Gustav and Hilda Knutson as her godparents, and confirmed at Lake Preston Lutheran Church. She attended Canyon Lake Elementary School in Rapid City, South Dakota. After leaving Rapid City, she attended schools in Elk Horn, Iowa; Fremont, Neb.; Dickinson, N.D.; and graduated from Lake Preston, South Dakota. She attended Southeast VoTech in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where she graduated as an LPN.

She worked 10 years in South Dakota, Montana and Missouri before completing her associate degree in nursing at SDSU.

She worked at Sacred Heart Hospital for several years, then the state hospital for seven years. In 1987, she moved to California, where she worked at Ventura General Hospital for four years before returning to South Dakota to bring her first grandchild into this world. She stayed in South Dakota 1 1/2 years before she returned to California and became Director of Nursing of a 75-bed long-term care, three-story assisted living facility, plus 90 independent cottages. Following this, she returned to bedside nursing at Ventura County Medical Center in the psychiatric unit. For most of her career, she worked the night shift and preferred it that way.

She was married January 1971 to Marvin Olson. they divorced in 1972. Their daughter Syerenna was born Friday, April 13, 1972.

Jean is survived by her mother, Viola (Wentz-Breen) Bauder in Scotland, S.D.; brother Robert Breen (daughter Julie, and son Christopher) in Tempe, AZ; best friend and life-long companion Don Jackson in Ventura, CA; daughter Syerenna (Olson) Van Bruggen (husband James, S.O. Lacy, children Nicholas, Stefanie, Robert and Shawn) in Soldotna, AK; step-sister Pauline Finck (husband Leroy [deceased]) in Tripp, S.D.; step-brother Duane Bauder (wife Shari) of Yankton, S.D.; step-brother Marvin Bauder, Tyndall, S.D.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, March 20, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church in Scotland, S.D. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.


Marie O'Grady, 1929-2009

Marie Frances O’Grady was born on Sunday, May 12, 1929 on the family farm near Tyndall, South Dakota. Her parents were William P. and Frances (Stulir) Varilek. When a hailstorm devastated their crops one summer, the family moved to be near her mother’s family in Endicott, New York. They lived there for three years, and it remained one of Marie’s favorite childhood memories. She received her high school education at the Tyndall and Tabor High Schools, and later attended Springfield Normal College. Marie married Robert Leo O’Grady on October 25, 1952 at St. Leo Catholic Church in Tyndall. In addition to being a homemaker and raising her two boys, she worked as a dental assistant to Dr. Isaak and Dr. Lindeman for many years. She also worked for the Selective Service Department at the courthouse in Tyndall and as a teacher’s aide during the time that they lived in Brookings. She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church where she belonged to the choir and the Altar Society. Marie was a proud member of the Czech Heritage Preservation Society. She enjoyed reading, going to T.O.P.S. meetings, and visiting with her many friends. She enjoyed playing games and cards and was a member of the Delta Dozen Card Club. She lived for many years in the Lidi Apartments, until becoming a resident of the Springfield Assisted Living Center in May of 2007. Marie passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 27 days.

Grateful to have shared Marie’s life are her two sons: Robert (Debbie) O’Grady of Watertown and John (Linda) O’Grady of Yankton; seven grandchildren: Nina (Jason) Lamb, and Steven, Megan, and Chase O’Grady, and Derek, Sean and Michael O’Grady; and a brother, William (Pat) Varilek of Tyndall.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert O’Grady, and her parents, William and Frances Varilek.


Vera Olson, 1911-2001

Vera M. Olson, 89, Tyndall, died Monday (January 22, 2001) at the St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall.

A funeral service is at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Gayville Lutheran Church, Gayville, with the Rev. Martin Ganschow officiating. Burial will be in the Gayville Community Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brian Anderson, Del Dockendorf, Brad Gibson, Brian Gibson, Kevin Gibson and Greg Schiltz. Visitation is from 1-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

She was born Nov. 27, 1911, at Clearwater, Neb., to Ernest and Mable (Clark) Nyrop. She went to school in Clearwater and graduated from Neligh High School in 1929. She went to Yankton College and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree on June 7, 1933. She went into teaching at Lennox and Gayville School systems. On June 19, 1936, she married Marvin C. "Sparky" Olson of Gayville at Buffalo, N.Y. They traveled a lot together while he played major league baseball. They lived in Alabama, Arizona, New York and Tennessee, but always made their home in Gayville. He died Feb. 5, 1998. For the past eight years she has made her home in Tyndall to be near her family.

She taught Sunday school, was a choir director for years and was a member of her ladies groups at the Gayville Lutheran Church until her retirement in 1988.

She will be well remembered for her love of music, especially playing the organ, singing and directing the church choir. She also enjoyed her flower garden, and watching and feeding the birds and squirrels. Throughout the years she had many special pets, including the most recent, a miniature greyhound named, "Kramer."

She is survived by one son, Andre Olson, Menno; a daughter, Linda (Gary) Gibson, Tyndall; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Marguerite Kramer, Truman, Minn.; many other relatives; and special caregiver, Lou Bullington, Tyndall.

She was preceeded in death by her parents; husband and one brother-in-law.


Velda Olsen, 1930-2002

Velda Olsen, 72, Avon, died Tuesday (April 30, 2002) at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, Avon. Burial is in the Baptist Cemetery, rural Wagner. Visitation is from noon-7:30 p.m. today (Thursday) with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, and from 9 a.m.-noon Friday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel, Avon.

She was born April 28, 1930, at Tripp to George and Elsie (Lippert) Mudder. She attended school in the Avon area and graduated from Avon High School in 1948. She married Dewey Olsen March 27, 1951, at the Baptist Church, Avon. She worked as a waitress at the Rancho Cafe and as a clerk at the Avon Drug Store for many years. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center, Wagner, from Dec. 11, 1997, to Oct. 5, 1998. She then re-entered from Jan. 5, 2000, to March 24, 2000. She transferred to the Good Samaritan Center, Tyndall, March 27, 2000. Her husband died Nov. 22, 2000.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Avon, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years and was secretary of the adult Sunday School class. She also was a member of the Women's Missionary Fellowship.

She will be remembered for her love of watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed cooking, baking and visiting with people.

She is survived by her son, Bob (Pam), Timmonsville, S.C.; two grandchildren; two great-grandsons; two brothers: Alvin and Jerry, both of Avon; one sister, Miriam Johnson, Lennox; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, one granddaughter, her parents, two brothers and one sister.


Ruby Ochsner, 1926-2008

Ruby A. Ochsner, age 81, of Zeeland (Michigan) died Saturday, January 12, 2008 at Holland Hospital.

She was born in Scotland, South Dakota and moved to Michigan in 1957. She retired from Holland Die Cast after 27 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Helmuth (2003), grandsons Michael Yedinak (1999) and Benjamin Kleeves (2002), brother LeRoy Schneider and sister-in-laws Ida and Faye Schneider.

John Ochsner, 1858-1904

Mr. John Ochsner, one of the coun­ty's most highly esteemed and ex­emplary farmers, died of diabetes at his home eight miles north of Medina yesterday morning. Mr. Ochsner came to Medina from Scotland, South Dakota in the spring of 1900. He purchased a section of land, and at once built up and opened a fine farm.

He leaves a wife, four children and a brother, Chas. H. Oshsner, to mourn his loss.

The funeral will take place at Medina, Tuesday, at 1 o'clock.

Peter Orth, 1912-2001

Peter Anton Orth, 88, Scotland, died Saturday (May 19, 2001) at the Good Samaritan Center, Scotland.

Funeral services are at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Church of Christ, Scotland, with the Rev. Stephen Holmes officiating. Burial is at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Yankton. Pallbearers will be Tim Becker, Jeff Becker, Scott Bierle, Todd Bierle, Conley Orth and Shannon Orth. Visitation is from 2-9 p.m. today (Wednesday) with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at the Petrik-Kelley Funeral Home, Scotland.

He was born Aug. 23, 1912, in Yankton County to Anton and Kathrena (Jose) Orth. He married Alta Magstadt Oct. 31, 1935, at the Magstadt home by Rev. John Meer. They farmed on the family farm near Lesterville until they retired and moved into Scotland in 1976. He taught Sunday School, worked for the ASCS, sang in the men's chorus and was a member of the Board of Directors of B-Y Water. He also worked at the Scotland Locker.

He was a member of the Peterburg Congregational Church and the Scotland United Church of Christ, where he was a Deacon and Trustee. He was also a member of the North Star Board.

He is survived by his wife, Alta, Scotland; four children: Dorene (Marlin) Becker, Meckling; Ronald (Loraine) Orth, Scotland; Verna (Luverne) Bierle, Webster City, Iowa; and LeRoy (Laverna) Orth, Spencer, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Martha Bauder; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.


Burnell Odens, 1924-2013

Funeral services for Burnell Odens, 88, of Springfield are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield. Burial is in the church cemetery, rural Springfield, with Military Honors. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Sharing of Memories at 6 p.m. at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield.

Burnell C. Odens was born December 10,1924 on a farm northwest of Springfield. The son of Jerry and Grace (Kuiper) Odens, Burnell died Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Home in Tyndall, SD. Burnell had attained the age of 88 years, 11 months and 24 days.

Burnell attended grade school at the Kirkwood Country School west of Springfield, and graduated from Springfield High School, class of 1942. Burnell began farming northwest of Springfield and on June 6th, 1944, he joined the US Navy, serving as a Fire Control Man, Third Class on the aircraft carrier, USS Siboney.

Burnell married Georgia Anna DeRoos June 21, 1949. Together they farmed west of Springfield for over 50 years, moving into Springfield in February 1972.

Burnell made confession of his Christian faith and was a faithful member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church all of his life. Burnell served as a Deacon, an Elder and as the sixth grade Sunday School teacher for 52 years.

Burnell will be remembered for his strong faith, wisdom, kindness, dry wit and a gentle soul. Burnell loved to be amongst family and friends, of which there are many.

Thankful for having shared his life are his son, Bruce, and wife, Nola (Nemeth) Odens of Roseville, CA; six grandchildren: Lynn and husband, Mark Owen, Omaha, NE; Brian Odens and Carley Werven, St Paul, MN; Jill Odens, Omaha, NE; Laura and Matt Ishmael, Omaha, NE; Adam Odens and Samantha Odens, Roseville, CA; great-grandchildren: Emmerleigh Odens and Harper Owen; brother, Jim and wife, Pat Odens of rural Springfield, along with many relatives and friends.

Burnell was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Grace; wife, Georgia Anna; infant daughter, Renae Inez, son, Loren and wife, Donna (Zweber) Odens.


Norman Ochsner, 1930-2013

Funeral services for Norman Ochsner of rural Scotland will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, December 30 at the United Church of Christ in Scotland with Rev. Ron Shifley officiating. Organist is Shirley Orth. Interment will follow in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland. Casketbearers are Mark Ochsner, John Ochsner, Ardell Ochsner, Robert Ochsner, Robert Ulmer, and Marty Munkvold. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the services at the church.

Norman Ochsner was born on Sunday, April 13, 1930 on the family farm north of Scotland in Hutchinson County. He was one of four boys born to Fred W. and Martha (Reister) Ochsner. He was baptized and confirmed at the Bethany Reformed Church in Scotland and attended grade school at the Mann District School #33 through the 8th grade. Norman was born, grew up and lived his entire life on the farm that he loved. He spent his life doing what he loved best — farming the land and raising Hereford cattle. It is there that he died suddenly on Thursday, December 26, 2013, having achieved the age of 83 years, 8 months and 13 days.

Norman is survived by three brothers: Myron Ochsner of Scotland, Eldon and wife Marlene (Schneider) Ochsner of Scotland, and Ken Ochsner of Kaylor; four nephews: Mark Ochsner of Kaylor, John (Kim) Ochsner of Hartford, Robert Ochsner of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and Ardell (Betsy) Ochsner of Dubuque, Iowa; three nieces: Laura Ochsner of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Bev (Robert) Ulmer of Tabor and Cheryl (Marty) Munkvold of Tea; and eleven grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Martha Ochsner, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Ochsner.


Virginia Oorlog, 1927-2009

Funeral services for Virginia L. Oorlog of Tripp will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 26 at the Danzig Baptist Church, rural Avon, with Pastor Aaron Rush officiating. Organist is June Finck, with special music by Leandra Mogck and Larry and Leatta Pudwill. Interment will follow in Danzig Baptist Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Virginia’s grandsons: Robert Bietz, Monte Bietz, Jon Bietz, David Oorlog, Scott Oorlog, Jeffrey Kotalik, Justin Kotalik and Jason Kotalik.

Virginia Laverne Oorlog was born on Tuesday, October 25, 1927 on the family farm near Tripp in Bon Homme County. Her parents were Henry and Beatha (Schelske) Haeffner. She attended country school near Tripp and Tripp High School through her sophomore year. Virginia was united in marriage to Henry G. “Hank” Oorlog on October 25, 1945. The newly constructed Reformed Church in Tripp wasn’t complete at that time, so the wedding took place in the basement of the church. She was a devoted and hard-working farm wife for 30 years. Virginia loved gardening and baking, and will be remembered for her caramel rolls, raised doughnuts and peach kuchen. Every member of the family got a coat sewn just for them by Virginia. After she and Hank moved to Tripp, she worked as a cook at the Tripp School. Later, she worked as a seamstress at Raven Industries in Parkston and was employed there for 20 years. Virginia loved to go fishing and also enjoyed bowling, listening to music, and following Minnesota Twins baseball. She was a member of Danzig Baptist Church. Virginia became a resident of the Tripp Good Samaritan Society on July 5, 2007, and it is there that she passed away on Friday, October 23, 2009, at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 28 days.

Grateful for having shared Virginia’s life are her three children: Chuck (Gloria) Oorlog of South Sioux City, Iowa, Connie (Don) Sonne of Big Stone Lake and Cathy (Glen) Bochman of Springfield; 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Doris Schneider of Tripp, Mary (Ray) Bouza of Tripp and Diane Horvath of Sioux Falls.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Hank Oorlog, an infant son, David Oorlog, her parents, Henry and Beatha Haeffner, and a brother, Eldon Haeffner.


Esther Ogan, 1919-2004

Esther Ogan, age 84 of Tyndall, passed away Monday, February 2, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA, following surgery for brain tumors.

A Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2004, at Tyndall Presbyterian Church in Tyndall with Rev. Bob Burdett officiating. Burial will be in the Tyndall Presbyterian Cemetery at a later date. The Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, is in charge of arrangements.

Esther was born on July 29, 1919, to Frank and Emma (Vavruska) Sutera in rural Tabor, South Dakota. Esther attended Vlasak Country School and graduated from Tyndall high School in 1936. She attended Southern State Teachers College at Springfield for two years. She taught at James School near Avon for two years and in Winner, SD, for three years. In 1943, she moved to California and worked as a secretary to the Vice President of Douglas Aircraft in El Segundo. On December 16, 1949, Esther was united in marriage to Frank Ogan at the First Presbyterian Church of Los Angeles. In July 1958, Esther traded the business world for being a full-time mother to their pride and joy, Sara Louise, who came to their home when she was two weeks old. In 1964, Esther became employed by the Glendale School District as a secretary. In later years, she worked for the Glendale Community College. She retired in 1986. In the early 90's, Esther and Frank moved from LaCrecenta, CA, to Santa Maria, CA. In the summer of 2002, Frank and Esther moved to their present home in Tyndall, SD.

Esther was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church. For many years, she was a member of her church choir. Esther always enjoyed traveling and going camping. She enjoyed being with family and friends and playing cards. She always looked forward to the family reunions.

Her memory will be cherished by her husband, Frank of Tyndall, SD; three sisters: Mabel Winningham of Tyndall, SD; Ruth Pinkley of Houston, TX; and Shirley Sawatzke of Crofton, NE; three brothers: Eugene Sutera of Tyndall, SD; Wayne Sutera of Tyndall, SD; and Dan Sutera of Onida, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sara; her parents; an infant brother, Clarence; and two brothers, Wilbur and Jim.


Rose Olson, 1904-2003

Rose Charlotte Olson, 98, Avon, died Tuesday (May 6, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center, Tyndall.

Funeral service is 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Tyndall. Burial is in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Avon. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel, Avon.

She was born May 18, 1904, in rural Scotland to Lawrence and Barbara (Mikuska) Thaler. As a young child she moved with her family to a homestead near Geddes where she attended school in the Charles Mix County area. She married Herman Olson April 16, 1923, at Sioux Falls. She spent her entire life in the Charles Mix and Bon Homme county areas. She was a farm wife all of her life, until retiring and moving to Tyndall in 1972. She became a resident of the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center on Nov. 26, 1993.

She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and her enjoyment of fishing and gardening. She always had the coffee pot on at her home.

She is survived by three daughters: Mildred Trukke, Joshua Tree, Calif.; Eda Ehrisman, Tyndall; and Charlotte Wallace, Barstow, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Olson, Tyndall; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a brother, Frank Thaler, Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988, one son and six siblings.


Alta Orth, 1914-2011

Funeral services for Alta Orth of Scotland will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 19 at United Church of Christ in Scotland, with Rev. Ron Shifley officiating. Organist will be Lois Hehn. Interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton at 1:00 p.m on Monday, with Alta's grandchildren as active and honorary casketbearers. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Goglin Funeral Home in Scotland, with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m.

Alta Orth was born on Thursday, November 12, 1914 in Bon Homme County near Scotland, South Dakota to William and Margaret (Gall) Magstadt. She attended country school through the 8th grade. Alta was united in marriage to Peter Orth on October 31, 1935 at her parent’s home near Scotland. They farmed for nearly 40 years near Lesterville, and retired to Scotland in 1976. Alta enjoyed getting together with other ladies to work on quilts. She loved to sew and made many shirts and dresses for her children and later, her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and cooking and will be remembered for her holiday treats. She and Peter were also known for their homemade noodles. Alta was the family historian and lovingly compiled scrapbooks which held the newspaper clippings and memorabilia of her children’s and grandchildren’s achievements during their school years. Alta became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland in January of 2007, and it is there that she passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, having achieved the age of 97 years, 1 month, and 2 days.

Alta’s memory will be cherished by her four children: Dorene (Marlin) Becker of rural Meckling, Ronald Orth of Scotland, Verna (Luverne) Bierle of Webster City, Iowa, and LeRoy (Laverna) Orth of Ames, Iowa; twelve grandchildren: Timothy Becker, Jeffrey Becker, Julie Becker, Conley Orth, Shannon Orth, Kyle Orth, Darren Orth, Scott Bierle, Todd Bierle, Tonya Matuszak, Pamela Covell and Kirsten Alexander; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, Elmer Magstadt, and one sister, Esther (Al) Gall, both of Scotland.

In addition to her parents, William and Margaret Magstadt, Alta was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Orth in 2001, a sister, Laura Orth, a brother in infancy, a daughter-in-law, Loraine Orth in 2007, a grandson-in-law, Christopher Covell, and a sister-in-law, Ethel Magstadt.


Frances "Gerri" Oleson, 1930-2001

F. Geraldine "Gerri" Oleson, 71, Yankton, died Monday (May 14, 2001) at Rice Care Center, Willmar, Minn.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ, Yankton, with the Rev. Marilyn Stone officiating. Inurnment will be at the Czech National Z.C.B.J. Cemetery, Tyndall. Ray, Cantrell and Wintz Funeral Home, Yankton, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born Jan. 22, 1930, at Gregory to Louis and Geraldine (Dunlap) Musilek. She grew up and attended rural schools in Bon Homme County, graduating from the Springfield High School and from Southern State Teachers College. On Aug. 14, 1949, she married Dale Oleson and they made their home in Yankton. She earned her Master's degree +30 from the University of South Dakota. She taught high school, American History and Social Studies for over 37 years. For four years in Crofton, Neb., one year in Lincoln, Ill., and 32 years in Yankton, retiring in 1994.

She enjoyed her family, friends and former students, roses, bird watching and her pets.

She is survived by a son, Michael (Sharon) Oleson, Spicer, Minn.; a daughter, Marlys (Bill) Brimmer, Bakersfield, Calif.; two granddaughters; one niece; one nephew; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.


Mae Oliver, 1922-2004

Mae Oliver, 82, Avon, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at St. Michael's Hospital in Tyndall. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Zion Lutheran Church in Avon with Pastor Ken Johnson, officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery, rural Avon. Visitation will be Wednesday from noon until 8 p.m. at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel in Avon.

Mae Elizabeth Oliver, was born in Avon, South Dakota, on May 6, 1922, to Edward and Lydia (Sattler) Brandt. Her birth was notable because it was the first successful caesarean delivery in the state of South Dakota. She attended grade school in rural Charles Mix County and graduated from Avon high school 1941. She and husband Charles were married on September 8, 1944. God blessed that union with two children, Larry born in 1947 and Lucinda born in 1952.

Mae was a baptized, confirmed life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church. She worked as a med-aid and physical-therapist aid at the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center from 1963 to 1986. Mae is remembered for her healing hands and compassion when caring for her patients. She was a life-time member of the Avon Legion Auxiliary.

In retirement, Mae was an avid quilter. She and Charles sewed and quilted more than 50 quilts which they gave to family and friends. Mae also had the greenest of thumbs gardening in Summer and raising indoor plants in Winter.

Mae is survived by husband Charles, of Avon; son Larry and his wife, Bev, of Corvallis, OR, their daughter, CariAnn Belanger of Prineville, OR; and daughter Lucinda and husband, Randy, Selzler of Tulsa, OK and their children, Dean Selzler of Seoul, Korea and Leah Havlik of Coweta, OK. Mae has one surviving brother, Wallace and wife, Ione, Brandt of Yuma, AZ. There are also two surviving great-grandchildren, David Alan and Markus Michael Selzler.

Mae was preceded in death by her parents and one older, premature sister, who only lived a few hours.


Helen Oorlog, 1915-2003

Helen (Fithian) Oorlog, age 87, of Yankton, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at the Olivet United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phil Lint officiating. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, S.D. Visitations will be 7 to 9 p.m. today (Monday) at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Helen was born Oct. 17, 1915, to David and Jennie (Peterson) Fithian. She attended Freeman Public School. On Aug. 8, 1937, she married George C. Oorlog and from this union four children were born. Helen worked at the Human Services Center in Yankton for a number of years. Upon retirement she was active in her church and the Miracles of Jesus.

Helen was a long time member of the Olivet United Methodist Church and was involved in the church's Women's Organizations. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and crotching. She was also a member of the Secret Sister's Club.

Her memory is cherished by her children: Karen Oorlog White of Minneapolis; Roger Oorlog of Burnsville, Minn.; Russell Oorlog of Maple Grove, Minn.; and Ronald Oorlog of Yankton, S.D.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters.


Herbert Olsen, 1922-2002

Herbert Olsen, 79, Avon, died Monday (April 22, 2002) at McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, Avon. Burial is in the Trinity Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Avon, with military honors. Visitation is from 3-8 p.m. today (Thursday) with an 8 p.m. prayer service at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel, Avon. Visitation will resume from 9 a.m.-noon Friday at the funeral home.

He was born Nov. 24, 1922, at Kingsburg, to William 'Bill' and Jennie (DeJong) Olsen. He attended school in Springfield for two years and then went to Avon, graduating in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from Aug. 19, 1942, to January of 1946. He was stationed in Tacoma, Wash., and then traveled to Guam and Saipan. He married Wilma Mae Gibson May 25, 1948, at the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Avon. After he was discharged from the military, he was employed at the John Deere Implement in Avon from 1947-55. He bought a farm south of Avon in 1964 and worked there until he semi-retired in 2001. He continued to repair John Deere tractors until his death.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and had been an Elder since 1952. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He will be remembered for his love for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, repairing John Deere tractors, reading and watching TV.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma, Avon; one son, Dennis Olsen, Meckling; one daughter, Diane (Jerry) Bastemeyer, Sioux Falls; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Wilbert Olsen, Portland, Ore.; and one sister, Annie Hento, Springfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.


Charles Oliver, 1921-2009

Charles Edwin Oliver was born March 14, 1921, in rural Charles Mix County, South Dakota to Arthur and Laura (Watwood) Oliver. As a child he attended rural grade schools southwest of Avon and as a young adult he graduated from Avon High School in 1941. On September 8, 1944, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Mae Elizabeth Brandt. “Mae and Charlie” as they were affectionately known raised two children, Larry and Lucinda.

Charlie lived and worked in and around the community of Avon his entire life. Before he retired, Charlie worked for the Bon Homme County road department most of his adult life plowing snow in the winter and grading roads in the summer. Mae and Charlie faithfully attended Zion Lutheran Church in Avon during their nearly 60 years of marriage.

A Lifetime member of American Legion Post, he and Mae volunteered for the Legion and Legion Auxiliary, Zion Lutheran Church and were active in the restoration of several small cemeteries around Bon Homme County. In the winter they made many beautiful quilts.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mae in 2004. He is survived by sisters Erma Powers, Wagner, S.D., and Lois Sattler Avon, S.D.; son Larry and wife Bev Oliver of Corvallis, OR; daughter Lucinda Selzler and husband Randy of Coweta, OK; four grandchildren, Dean Selzler of Seoul, South Korea; CariAnn Oliver-Belanger, Bend, OR; Leah (Selzler) Havlik, Coweta, OK; Richard Selzler of Coweta, OK, and three great-grandchildren.

Charlie went to Heaven to be with the Lord and Mae on May 15, 2009, after several months of declining health.

Services will be held on 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Zion Lutheran Church in Avon, S.D., with Pastor Ken Johnson officiating. Burial will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Crosby-Jaeger funeral chapel in Avon.


Loraine Orth, 1940-2007

Loraine Orth died on Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 67 years, 3 months and 28 days.

Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2007, at United Church of Christ, Scotland, South Dakota, with Pastor Del Neumeister officiating. Music will be provided by organist Lois Hehn. Casketbearers are John Grosz, Cory Grosz, Jeff Becker, Tim Becker, Todd Bierle and Wayne Gall. Honorary casketbearers is the Scotland Red Hat Society. Interment is in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, South Dakota.

Loraine Orth was born on Tuesday, May 7, 1940, in Charles Mix County to Arthur E. and Martha (Schweinforth) Weisser. She was raised in the Tripp-Delmont area and was baptized on August 28, 1940, and confirmed on April 3, 1955, at Frieden's Reformed Church in Tripp. As a young woman, Loraine worked at Abbott House and the Townhouse Caf in Mitchell. While living in Mitchell, she took teaching courses at Dakota Wesleyan College. She earned her teaching certificate, and taught 1st grade at Scotland Elementary School. Loraine was united in marriage to Ronald Orth on August 14, 1966, at the United Church of Christ in Scotland.

Loraine loved teaching, and working with young children was her calling in life. In addition to raising her own four boys, she taught in elementary school, ran her own preschool and worked for many years as a teaching aide at the Scotland Elementary School. It was with great regret that she retired recently to fight her courageous battle with cancer.

Loraine was a devoted member of the United Church of Christ in Scotland and was active in the Women's Guild and with Women's Fellowship. She was also a member of the Scotland Red Hat Society.

She will be remembered for her positive, generous spirit and her unwavering faith.

Loraine will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially her husband, Ronald Orth of Scotland; four sons: Conley (Vickie) Orth and Dillon, Tanner and Skylar, Shannon (Becky) Orth and Jace, and Kyle Orth, all of Sioux Falls, and Darren (Mary) Orth of Pensacola, Florida; her mother, Martha Weisser of Tripp; a sister, Alice Tulio of Yuma, Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Weisser.


Leondina Orth, 1899-1969

Funeral services for Mrs. John (Leondina) Orth, 69, will be at 2pm Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Louis Cowherd officiating. Interment will be in the Rosehill Cemetery under the direction of the Schmidt Funeral Home.

She was born July 11, 1899 at Lesterville to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gall and died March 16, 1969 at a Yankton hospital after a long illness. On June 18, 1918 she married John Orth who died in 1929. She was a gold star mother.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Ruth) Reynolds, Crystal City, Mo; Mrs. Kenneth (Eleanor) Garver, Palm Bay, Fla.; Mrs. George (Dorothy) Mott, Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Donald (Leona) Claymore, Sioux Falls; two sons, Elroy, Sioux City, and John, Thousand Oaks, Calif. Also 18 grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. John Weber, Scotland; Mrs. August Herr, Tripp; Mrs. Edna Vansand, Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. Loren Palmer, Coupeville, Wash., and Mrs. Sophia Echart, Minot, ND, and two brothers, Henry and Gust Gall, Scotland.

Dorothy Ochsner, 1939-2011

Funeral services for Dorothy J. Ochsner of Kaylor will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 17 at the United Church of Christ in Scotland with Rev. Gordon Harris officiating. Interment will follow in Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with the family present to greet visitors from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at the Goglin Funeral Home in Scotland.

Dorothy Jean Oschner was born on Tuesday, June 13, 1939 at Parkston, South Dakota to Henry and Lena (Mehlhaff) Schoon. She grew up on a farm east of Parkston and attended Fairview School District #9. She was baptized and confirmed by Rev. Henry Roemer. On February 22, 1959, she married Kenneth Ochsner at the Bethany Reformed Church in Scotland. Dorothy was a farm wife all her life. She was an active member of the UCC Women’s Fellowship and served as the treasurer for many years. Dorothy enjoyed cooking, baking, embroidery work, quilting, gardening and playing softball in her younger years. She also was an avid bowler most of her adult life until her health began to fail, winning numerous awards and trophies. Dorothy passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 71 years, 8 months and 30 days.

Dorothy’s memory will be cherished by her husband, Kenneth Ochsner of Kaylor; her daughter, Beverly (Robert) Ulmer of Tabor; three sons: Mark Ochsner of Kaylor, John (Kim) Ochsner of Hartford, and Ardell (Betsy) Ochsner of Jesup, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Stephanie, Brittany, Lindsay and Scott Ulmer, and Tanya, Kyle, Zoey, Kamden and Brennan Ochsner; one sister, Darlene Schoon of Freeman; two brothers: Roger (Donna) Schoon of Whitewood and Louis (Ann) Schoon of Parkston; and her numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Kenneth Schoon, and sister-in-law, Erna Schoon.


Laura Oliver, 1891-1983

Funeral Services for Laura Oliver were held Wednesday, April 20, 1983 from the First Presbyterian Church in Avon, with Rev. Chester Mason officiating. Mrs. Oliver passed away in the Good Samaritan Home in Tyndall on April 17, 1983. Rosalee Sternhagen and Sandra Pier, a duet, and Shirley Hofer provided the music. Pallbearers were Alan Meiers, Randy Selzier, Larry and Steve Kozel, Larry Oliver, Galen Nelson, and Jim and Bob Sattler. Burial was in Springfield Cemetery. Laura Alma Oliver passed away Sunday morning at St. Michael's Hospital at Tyndall, South Dakota at the age of 91. Laura was born May 28, 1891 to John and Alma (Marvin) Watwood, southeast of Avon. She attended rural schools and Southern State Normal School at Springfield. She taught school until her marriage to Arthur Oliver on Feb. 20, 1917. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and American Legion Auxiliary of Avon. She became a member of G. S. Home in Tyndall in May of 1976. Survivors include one son, Charles and daughter-in-law Mae; daughters Erma Powers and Lois and son-in-law Art Sattler, all of Avon; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, John Watwood, and a sister, Edith Lyons, both of Gardena, Ca. She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur in 1945, an infant son, son-in-law Clarence Powers, her parents, a brother Marion, and a sister Ada.


Arthur Oliver, 1886-1945

Arthur Oliver, a life-long resident of the Avon community, died at the Sacred Heart hospital at Yankton last Thursday morning, September 20, 1945 at 4:30. Mr. Oliver's health had been gradually failing for some time, until he was finally forced to discontinue farming and he and Mrs. Oliver moved to Avon last spring. Mr. Oliver was born May 10, 1886, on the old home place located seven and one-half miles south of Avon. He spent his youth in that community, and on February 20, 1917, he was united in marriage to Miss Laura Watwood. They were the parents of four children, the oldest son dying in infancy. He is survived by his wife, living in Avon, two daughters and one son, as follows: Erma, (Mrs. Clarence Powers); Lois (Mrs. Arthur Sattler); and Charles, all of Avon. Four sisters and one brother also survive. They are: Mabel (Mrs Arthur Luke), Tyndall; Sarah, (Mrs. Martin Ferwerda), Springfield; Marian (Mrs. O.D. Fees) Avon; Edna (Mrs. Peter Ferweda) Springfield; Loren of Yankton; one granddaughter Sharon Marie Powers. Three brothers and one sister preceded Mr. Oliver in death. Funeral services were held last Sunday afternoon from the First Presbyterian Church in Avon, with the Rev. J.M. Dirks officiation, interment was in the Springfield cemetery.


Elizabeth Oorlog, 1920-2007

Funeral services for Elizabeth Oorlog, 87, of Avon will be 1 p.m. Monday, October 1, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Avon, with Rev. Michael Brandt officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Avon. Visitation will be at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel in Avon Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Elizabeth Oorlog was born February 5, 1920, the daughter of Phillip and Alma (Gentele) Schmoll. She died unexpectedly Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at her home in Avon. Liz attained the age of 87 years, seven months and 20 days.

Liz was united in marriage to Dick Oorlog on March 9, 1940, and they were blessed with 52 years together. Dick died March 14, 1992.

Liz was a lifelong resident of Avon and loved quilting, playing games and fishing. She was a lifetime member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and a member of the Senior Citizens in Avon. Liz was a designated, volunteer driver for the residents of Avon. She enjoyed each day and reaching out to the people in it.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children: Morris and wife, Judy of Kimball, and Marla Boese and husband, Bob of Sioux Falls; daughter-in-law, Lolita of Morristown, MN; six grandchildren: Denyse, Colin, Michelle, Trina, Anita and Lisa; nine great grandchildren: two brothers: Ray Schmoll of Rockford, IL; Arnie and wife Darliene Schmoll of Shannon, IL; three sisters: Lydia Craig and husband, Wayne of Freeport, IL; Lanora Barker and husband Bill of Roseburg, OR; and Vi Bushman of Dixon, IL; and many friends.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband; son, Myron in 2006; infant daughter, Myrna; parents; two brothers: Jake and Leonard Schmoll; and one sister, Esther Stimpson.


Wilma Olsen, 1928-2009

Funeral services for Wilma Olsen, 81, of Avon, are 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 6, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church in Avon. Visitation will be at the church Sunday from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. Prayer Service. Burial is in the Trinity Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Avon. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel in Avon is in charge of arrangements.

Wilma Mae Olsen was born February 27, 1928 in the Geddes Hospital in Geddes, S.D., the daughter of Ernest and Jannatta (Uken) Gibson. She died Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D. Wilma attained the age of 81 years and one month.

Wilma grew up and attended school south of Wagner. She moved with her family to a farm south of Avon in 1943, at the age of 15. She attended and graduated from Avon High School. After graduation she taught rural schools in Bon Homme County and worked at the Tyndall Nursing Home and Hospital.

Wilma married Herb Olsen on May 25, 1948. They farmed south of Avon until Herb’s death on April 22, 2002. Wilma then moved into the Meadow View Manor in Avon.

Wilma was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Ladies Aid and also the Avon American Legion Auxiliary.

Wilma will be remembered for her love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a very generous and giving person. Wilma was also a woman of great faith who loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Thankful for having shared her life are her son, Dennis Olsen of Meckling; daughter, Diane and husband Jerry Bastemeyer of Sioux Falls; four grandchildren: Denise and husband, Chad Peterson of Vermillion, Angela and husband, Terry O’Neill of Henry, Chadwick Olsen and fiance’, Amy Haase of Tea, and Amber and husband, Robb Lindner of Sioux Falls; six great-grandchildren and one to be born at the end of April and one in November; sister, Verna and husband Glen Jerke of Dante; two brothers: Norman and wife Shirley Gibson of Dante, Gary and wife Linda Gibson of Tyndall; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Herb, her parents, sister, Betty Grimme, infant brother, Charles Gibson and a nephew.


Emmett "Ike" Oleson, 1924-2015

Emmett B. ”Ike” Oleson, age 90, died on Friday, January 30, 2015 surrounded by his family. Family present visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM on Monday at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls with a public Masonic service beginning at 6:30 PM. Memorial services will begin at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the Springfield United Congregational Church of Christ, 1002 College St., Springfield, SD.

Emmett B. “Ike” Oleson was born on March 6, 1924 at Lake Andes, South Dakota in Charles Mix County to Chris and Carrie Odena Oleson. He was raised and received his education at Lake Andes, graduating from Lake Andes High School in 1941. Ike then moved to find work in Iowa, until the outbreak of WWII. He then joined the war effort with the US Army. It was this experience that left Ike with a great philosophy and appreciation for vocational education. Following three years and nine months serving with Company A of the 20th Tank Battalion; Ike received his honorable discharge. Through the GI Bill, Ike attended the South Dakota State Teachers College and received his Bachelors of Science degree in Education. He then furthered his education at Colorado State University receiving a Master’s degree with a Major in Administration and Supervision of Vocational Education.

On June 18, 1948 Ike was united in marriage with Frankie Ann Monfore in Springfield, SD. The couple made their first home in Springfield. They were blessed with a daughter, Nancy and son, Kurtis.

Ike taught and coached in Ravinia where he coached the Bears in a state basketball championship game. This great team of men has continued to gather for reunions to this day. He served in the Kimball and Chamberlain school districts and at Southern State College.

After teaching and coaching for 16 years, South Dakota Governor Boe appointed Ike the first State Director of Vocational Services. In 1963 Congress passed legislation to provide funding for Vocational Education. This led Ike to the establishing of six post-secondary vocational schools. He went on to serve the Camplell County School District in Gillette, WY and the Wyoming State Department of Education. His final assignment in education was to serve as the Special Consultant to the Department of Education for American Samoa.

Ike consistently served the communities in which he lived. He has been an active member of Masons, Eastern Star and Shrine. He served in many different offices and took special pride in serving as the Potentate for Yelduz Shrine of Aberdeen in 2000. He was an active member of the United Church of Christ in each communities in which he lived.

When he wasn't busy serving others, Ike enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, wood-working and gardening.

He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, coach, community leader and friend.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Frankie M. Oleson, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter, Nancy Frentz and her husband, Gary of Custer, SD; son, Kurtis Oleson and his wife, Jan, Sioux Falls, SD; four granddaughters: twins, Kelly (Eric) McMillan, Wall, SD and Kate Frentz, Hill City, SD, Jessie Oleson and Mikayla Oleson, both of Sioux Falls, SD; and one future great-granddaughter.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Chris and Carrie Odena Oleson; one sister Metta Oleson Cooper and seven brothers, Charlie, Orville, Kermit, Kenneth, Kermit, Lawrence, and George.


May Oorlog, 1921-2015

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Avon, followed by burial in the Trinity Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Avon. Visitation will be at the church Friday from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by a prayer service. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home of Avon is in charge of the arrangements.

May Louise (Edwards) Oorlog died on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Tyndall Good Samaritan Center at the age of 93. May was born May 4, 1921 at her home in Avon to Frank and Wilhelmina (Zitka) Edwards. She grew up in Avon and went to Avon Public School. May married Harold Oorlog on August 7, 1939 in Olivet, S.D. She lived all but four years of her life in Avon. Harold and May joined the Trinity Presbyterian Church in April of 1954. May was a stay at home mom. She started babysitting in their home in 1960. She babysat for five different families over the years, all of which were teachers. May was very active in the church. She was treasurer for the church for 12 years. She was a life time member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 49 years. She served as chaplain for many years and enjoyed this very much. May also enjoyed embroidering, playing pinochle and playing dominos with her great grandchildren. She was a woman of faith and stated her greatest accomplishment was raising children. She has always enjoyed children and especially her grandchildren.

Thankful for having shared her life are her five children: Richard (Karen) Oorlog of Palm Coast, Florida, Marceleen (Luane) Rothschadl of Lena, Illinois, Doris (Jerome) Goetz of Yankton, South Dakota, Ron (Wanda) Oorlog of Frisco, Texas, and Bob (Pat) Oorlog of Cedarville, Illinois; 12 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; two sisters: Ella Hansen of Florida and Florence Yule of Minnesota; nieces; nephews; many other relatives and friends.

May was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Harold; parents Franklin and Wilhelmina Edwards; brother Edwin; granddaughter Tonice Oorlog at birth; grandson Gregory Winckler; and great granddaughter Cyndi Woodger.

Memorials will be directed to the Good Samaritan Society in Tyndall.


Edna O'Brien, 1921-2003

Edna O'Brien, 81, Springfield, died Friday (April 11, 2003) at her home.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ, Springfield. Burial is in the Bon Homme Cemetery, rural Springfield. Visitation is from noon-7 p.m. Sunday with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Springfield.

She was born April 17, 1921, at Doon, Iowa, to Joe and Kate (Otten) Mulder. She attended Christian school at Doon. She married Clarence DeJong Feb. 14, 1940, at Doon. She married George P. O'Brien May 20, 1980, at Sioux City, Iowa. They moved to Springfield in 1984, where Clarence worked at the Correctional Facility as a culinary arts teacher. Clarence died April 19, 1990.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Women's Fellowship, Dakota Club and a lifetime member of the Springfield Historical Society.

She will be remembered for her enjoyment of cooking, entertaining, gardening and traveling. Her positive outlook on life and strength of faith will long be an inspiration to many.

She is survived by her children: Wendell Joe (Marilyn) DeJong, Sheldon, Iowa; Karen Rose Watson, Springfield; Carlen Dean (Janice) DeJong, Golden, Colo.; Larry Dale DeJong, Correctionville, Iowa; and Belinda Starr (Don) Carlson, Springfield; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Kooiker, Hull, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, her second husband, two brothers and two sisters.


Marilyn Olson, 1937-2005

Marilyn Olson, 67, of Tyndall, died Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in Tyndall, SD.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2005, at the Friedensburg Bible Church, rural Avon. Burial is in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, rural Avon. Visitation will be held Friday from 2 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner.

Marilyn M. Olson, daughter of Louis and Mary (Pesicka) Dvorak, was born August 25, 1937 at Ravinia, SD. Marilyn graduated from Ravinia High School and then attended Southern State Teacher's College in Springfield for two years. She married Ole T. Olson Sr. on February 11, 1956, at Lake Andes. Two children were born to their union.

Ole and Marilyn farmed in Bon Homme County. She worked at CR Industries in Springfield for over 20 years. After her retirement, Marilyn worked at Ampride in Tyndall as a cook. She was known for her pizzas and calzones. Marilyn will also be remembered for her enjoyment of crocheting and quilting. Her grandchildren and great-grandson were the light of her life and she enjoyed playing cards and games with them.

Thankful for having shared her life are her children: Ole Jr. and wife, Claudette of Avon, and Pam Denker and husband, Mike of Wagner; five grandchildren: Carl Denker and wife, Bethany, Jill Wells and husband, Kelly, Laura Denker, Brittany Olson and Lexi Olson; one great-grandson, Benjamin Denker; and many friends and relatives.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, on June 29, 1992; parents; brother, Edwin; and sister, Lois Morf.


Thomas Olson, 1950-2015

Thomas (Tom) S. Olson, of Scotland, SD, formerly of Springfield and Burbank, SD, passed away on June 25, 2015, at the age of 64.

Tom was born on November 13, 1950, the first child of Cecil and Doris Olson of Burbank, SD. While growing up on the farm, he developed a deep love of nature, music, his country, and family. He attended Fairview Country School, Vermillion High School, and The University of South Dakota, earning a B.S. Degree in Education. He worked at CR Industries in Springfield for a number of years.

Tom is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Dave Winckler of Vermillion, SD, nieces Jessica (Doug) Sanders of Tyndall, SD, Amanda Winckler and Sandi Winckler, both of Sioux Falls, SD, and Sadie Winckler of Vermillion, SD, along with seven great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Doris Olson, sister Linda Verros, brother Wayne Olson, and his grandparents Stephord and Belva Olson and Alex and Bertha Ernst.

A family service is being planned for a later date.


Ruth Olivier, 1928-2014

Ruth Olivier, 86, died at Good Samaritan Center in Corsica on Monday, October 27, 2014. Funeral service will be Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Christian Reformed Church in Corsica with burial following in Harrison City Cemetery in Harrison, SD. Visitation will be Friday, October 31, 2014 from 6 - 8 PM at Koehn Bros. Funeral Chapel in Corsica.

Ruth Olivier, 86, died peacefully at the Good Samaritan Center on Monday, October 27, 2014. Ruth was born February 11, 1928, in Running Water, SD to Peter and Dora (Vander Lei) Dykstra. She was the seventh of ten children. She and her siblings attended school in rural Running Water through the 8th grade.

As a young woman, Ruth worked at Lueken’s Bakery in Springfield. Later she moved to Lueken’s Mitchell location with two of her sisters, where they eventually purchased a house together. After 7 years of working for Lueken’s Bakery, Ruth met Marion Olivier and they married on June 27, 1958 at her home church of Emmanuel Reformed in Springfield, SD. The newlywed couple made their home in Corsica, SD, where they raised five children. In the 1970s Ruth began babysitting children in her home, many of whom became an extension of the Olivier family. She was well-known and well-loved for her homemade mashed potatoes at nearly every meal. In 1996 Ruth retired from babysitting and became a librarian where she could enjoy her love of reading and encourage children to do the same.

Ruth was a faithful member of the Christian Reformed Church in Corsica, where she was a member of the Dorcas Society and attended coffee breaks and Bible studies. She enjoyed solving jigsaw puzzles, coffee with friends, and was an avid reader. She was an excellent baker, especially renowned for her apple pies and angel food birthday cakes, which she always decorated by hand. Ruth loved special visits from her brothers and sisters, where several rounds of Skip-Bo cards were enjoyed by all.

Ruth moved to Leisure Living in Corsica in 2013 and later moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Corsica on August 21, 2014.

She is survived by two sons, Jim (Michelle) Olivier of Sioux Falls and Mark (Jay) Olivier of Lamesa, CA; three daughters, Colleen (Gary) Woods of Gillette, WY, Marlys (Sam) Bunsu of Gillette, WY, and Deb (Steve) Enger of Cambridge, IL; four grandchildren, Michael and Trevor Woods, Tegan and Tanner Bunsu; two brothers, Jayson and Darwin Dykstra of Avon, SD; three sisters, Jessie Boersma of Springfield, SD, Marie VanderVeen of Wakefield, NE, and Mabel Ludens of Sioux Falls, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marion; three brothers, Andrew, Raymond and Donald; and one sister, Annie Odens.


Evelyn Odens, 1927-2016

Evelyn D. Odens, 88, of Springfield, died peacefully, with the family at her side, Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society in Tripp. Evelyn attained the age of 88 years, three months and 18 days.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 2 at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield, with burial in the Emmanuel Cemetery, rural Springfield. Visitation is at the church on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Springfield is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Dorothy Odens, daughter of Pier G. and Anna C. (Mesman) DeRoos, was born November 10, 1927 on a farm near Springfield. Evelyn attended Kirkwood Country School through the eighth grade. She married Isaac Odens on March 24, 1950 at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in rural Springfield. Four daughters were blessed to their union. Together they farmed and raised their family west of Springfield. Ike died unexpectedly April 9, 1973. Evelyn later moved into Springfield where she worked at CR Industries from 1980 to 1990. She also worked for Green Thumb at the Senior Citizen Center in Springfield for many years.

Evelyn was a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield. She played piano for many different musical events. Evelyn enjoyed sewing, embroidering and crocheting. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Thankful for having shared her life are her daughters: Ilene Muller and husband Mike of Avon; Lyla Sigmund and husband Edwin of Mitchell; Jenean Wynia and husband Dennis of Springfield; and Mavis Amundson and husband Ken of Hartford; ten grandchildren and their families: Jason (Shawna) Muller; Bret (fiance’ Katy Hard) Muller; Bridgette (fiance’ Samson Metzger) Muller; Robin (fiance’ Aaron Kinzler) Muller; Tyler (Rachael) Hakl; Hailey (Zachary Semmler) Hakl; Jake (Jamie) Wynia; Anne Ritter; Jesse (Michelle) Sigmund; Melissa (Jonathan) Klein; one brother, Gerald (Wilma) DeRoos of Grandbury, TX; one sister, Ruth Berndt of Avon; her in-laws: Marjorie (Harold) Ludens and Beverly Jelsma, all of Springfield; Alice Odens of Chamberlain; and Gary (Sandy) Odens of Avon; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and in-laws: Harven Berndt; Phil (Eva) Odens; Winifred (Bernard) Kastein; Robert Jelsma; and Alvin Odens.
